Questions for Australians

I have seen some Australian movies and it is not unusual to have a reference to Spain or a Spanish character. There is even a movie called La Spagnola. Quite the opposite with American movies, they hardly ever show Spanish characters (They have enough with Mexicans, Colombians,etc). I suppose there must be a lot of Spanish immigrants over there or maybe, it was just a coincidence.

I have also noticed that many Australian movies love camp aesthetics. It could be another reason.

Any ideas?

No, not really, I am not sure where you get that information from. There are only a few Spanish immigrants, not a very large group, compared to for instance other large communities like Italians, Greeks or Croatians. La Spagnola was based on the real story of a Spanish woman living in Australia, that's why they cast a Spanish actress, however the title is in Italian. The largest group of Spanish speaking people would be the Chileans, but even still it is a small group. The Latino population in Australia is so low they are probably not even considered a minority unlike in United States.

A few known Australian movies such as Muriel's wedding and Priscilla Queen of the desert, have a camp aesthetic yes. They were also made more than 20 years ago. But most Australian films are not like this. Kath and Kimderella is a terrible example of Australian cinema. I suggest you do some research and start watching better Australian films.
