Only ONE other director could have done a better job...
Christopher Nolan!
shareInteresting choice
I'd say Denis Villleneuve pretty much nailed it... I think Ridley could have done something a little different, but not necessesarily better... I don't think Nolan would have made a movie with such great slow nuidling and alienated mood, as I don't think he would have been able to resist adding explanations as that is what a lot of his sci-fi fans expect from his movies and he also ensires that a mainstream audience will "get it"... although I will admit that Dunkrik doesn't suffer from this... and to my mind, BladeRunner is as much about mood as it is about the big ideas and big questions that Noland is more than capable of handling...
Denis seems ok with not having to appeal to the genral audience if it means that he can give a supperior aesthetic for the genre enthusiasts... check out Enemy for example
I did see Enemy and completely forgot it was directed by Villeneuve. I enjoyed that film as well, but the giant-insect-metaphor at the end went over my head. All I kept thinking about afterwards was Kafka's Metamorphosis.
"Denis seems ok with not having to appeal to the general audience if it means that he can give a supperior aesthetic for the genre enthusiasts."
I couldn't have expressed this point any better myself, and what I find baffling is the fact that there are some folks who didn't like this film, but enjoyed the original. How is that possible?!
Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did, and thanks for making a good point about Villeneuve's vision.
I don't think so.
shareHmmm....possible. I was not a fan of this villeneve guy i thought arrival was awful but blade runner 2049 is a masterpiece.
shareMe too....I thought Arrival was nothing but HYPE, but 2049 is INSANE!!
shareCould you explain why it is a MASTERPIECE to you? I'm genuinely curious why you use that word for this.
sharebecause the movie was soo damn good. i was on the edge of my seat the entire time. i was fully entertained and i loved the story and visuals everything. characters ect.
shareFair enough. I thought the visuals were fine - as typically expected from computers these days. The rest didn't do anything for me. But that's just me. LOVED the first BR, but TO ME this lacked. Can't see anything masterpiece about it.
sharei loved joi, and i loved the whole did joi actually love him ambiguity and the whole can robots/ai actually love.
shareNolan is great when he's great but horrible when he's not.
I was a big Nolan fan back in the Memento and Insomnia days, and yeah he's very ambitious, but frankly I'm convinced he's kind of dumb considering the kinds of brain-dead decisions he's made.
Plus, he knows nothing about science fiction. He took a Kip Thorne story for Interstellar and he mangled it beyond comprehension.
But, but what about his INCREDIBLE batman trilogy?? I mean, come on!
share1 - Batman Begins has some great parts, and is serviceable, but IMO very forgettable and there is some laughable crap in it. Also, Batman tries to kill police officers by bombing their cars in the high speed chase with the Tumbler, and for that he should be in prison for a long long time. Alfred was right: He's lucky no one was killed.
2 - Dark Knight was great, of course, but lacked focus in a major way. It also has some terrible ideas, and once again Batman almost bombs innocent people, namely those two kids in the back of a car who watch Batman blow up some cars that are in his way. What if the kids had been in one of those cars instead of 20 feet away in another car that was parked? Again, prison time.
3 - Dark Knight Rises was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Just awful in every way possible, and not even an ounce of thought put into the story or plot or characters.
=)
And the MASTERPIECE Inception? please don't tell me you think that's garbage as well?
shareInception is his best modern movie, by FAR. It hearkens back to Memento, and for that I was very grateful. Inception is a fantastic experience, and a tremendous lesson on editing together various plot threads.
Inception also has very few embarrassing parts that I would have removed, but it does have them.
Off the top of my head, I would have removed:
1) Reference to the easily-debunked urban myth of humans only using 10% or so of their brain power in the beginning of the movie;
2) Would have given an actual reason for Ariadne to join the heist, a legitimate role, since the story presents her as a hired "maze designer" and her presence within the heists is a random needless thing that only serves as her being an extra proxy for the audience (extra because Dicaprio is one as well);
3) Would have removed all reference to endless staircases (a very very old illusion) and Gordon-Levitt saying "Paradox" as he tosses a bad guy off of one. That was SO GIMMICKY, and furthermore, there was no "paradox" involved. The word was random thoughtless tripe.
Nolan seems to enjoy tackling complex subject matters, which makes his job exceptionally difficult. The more complex the subject (i.e. a dream within a dream with a dream), the more easy it is to make mistakes or overlook important details. And for the life of me, I don't understand why he's agreed to do Memento again!
shareHe enjoys tackling them, yes, but he often overestimates his own abilities and intellect. His brother Jonathan seems to be the actual brains behind their operation.
