Should've Been Jai Courtney in the Lead Role

Said no one, ever.

Okay seriously though, you people should be grateful we got Gosling and not one of the generic, assembly line charisma vacuums Hollywood often shoehorns into these roles - at least we know he has screen presence and some semblance of acting ability. It could be a lot worse.

Yeah, I really am grateful about the smart casting choices. Could you imagine if we got chris pratt, matt damon...and so on. Yeah I am a bit iffy on Jared Leto, I haven't seen him in a movie (no one was able to get me to watch suicide squad). But his role is probably minimal anyways.

At least Gosling can play a morally ambiguous character, the actors I mentioned above fit the good guy or 'dad' type in the case of matt damon.

reply

Matt Damon and Chris Pratt are talented actors, not in the same category as charisma vacuums like Courtney, but they definitely wouldn't be right for Blade Runner. When I heard Gosling would be in the lead role I was pretty much okay with it - I can see him delivering, he fits.

you didn't see jared in a movie ? what you know then about modern cinema?

reply

lol are you seriously saying Gosling isn't one of those generic charisma vacuums?= lol

reply

Yes, I am. The man practically carried Drive with hardly any dialogue. You can't do that without charisma.

reply

ryan gosling has as much talent and charisma as a dead fish.

reply

Drive is brilliant. And if you see Drive, you would know why they chose Ryan.

reply

He isn't at all troll. Did you watch Place Beyond the Pines? He was excellent in that.

reply

He was good in Fracture too, so he can play a more warm character as well, in contrast to the cold and darker roles in Drive and Only God Forgives.

reply

Also loved him in The Notebook. I am not embarassed to say I watched it lol.

C'mon, man, if we're comparing Gosling to Courtney, then "charisma vacuum" in no way applies to Gosling.

reply

are you kidding me? when has he EVER shown any charisma?

reply

I am absolutely not kidding you. Drive, The Notebook, The Nice Guys.

You can argue that Gosling doesn't have charisma. I'm fine with that. Just not in the same sentence with Jai Courtney. See what I'm saying?

reply

Why not?? I've seen them both and I've seen films for my entire life, I'm 33 and they are two of the worst actors in history. By all means, explain to me in what way are they different?

reply

Nah, don't worry about your age, I don't do that.

Let's boil this down to simple line delivery. Gosling can handle his own in conveying emotion but Courtney's nothing but wooden. Just a compete lack of presence. I mean, what else is there to this?

Hey, I get it; this is a to-each-his-own issue. But I just don't see an apt comparison here.

reply

emotion?? lol. The only role he has ever truly succeeded is Robert Durst in All Good Things and it was precisely because he didn't have to show ANY emotion. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a psychopath in real life. Anyway, it's pretty obvious that the international community is not at fault for the neverending decline in filmmaking quality, it's obvious Americans have forgotten about what real talent and real filmmaking truly is.

reply

La La Land, The Nice Guys, Half Nelson, The Big Short, Blue Valentine, The Believer, Place Beyond the Pines basically annihilate any argument that he's a bad actor. Drive proves he can play a stoic character pretty much devoid of most emotions(perfect for a Blade Runner with a dry sense of humour.

Harrison Ford is probably my favorite leading actor but the dude literally had Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star wars and a minor role in Apocalypse now and American Graffiti when Blade Runner was being filmed.

reply

all terrible movies that have succeeded because there is just nothing else. It doesn't mean anything.

reply

Neither of the both. Lots of stars with more charisma and unique style out there.

````````````
Imagine that.
reply
I can't think of any but Ryan Gosling is one of the worst ever.
reply
It could be a lot worse? I love Ryan Gosling very happy he is the main star.
reply
You got me. I came in to rip you for saying Jai Courtney should be a lead in anything bigger than a school play. Box office poison that guy.
reply
Gosling is great and he did great, the only great thing about this movie is actually Gosling.
reply
I agree. Dude did an excellent job if your understand what Villeneuve is trying to convey in this film.
reply
Jake Glynnhaal would have been a solid choice as well, but I think Gosling did well and probably looks more passable as Dekard's son than Glynhaal would have...
reply
But he isnt Deckards son....have you even seen the movie?
reply
i know he isnt, but for a period in the movie K believes he might be and the audience is led to share in this misconception... in fact, this is what triggers his spiritual awakening..
If K was Black or Chinese I don't think that part of the movie would work... not that Glynnhaal is that different looking to Harrison Ford & Sean Young... it's just that Gosling looks closer enough to them to have doubts as to whether or not he is their son...
