The box office failure of the second film makes the third film more remote.

This movie made almost $200 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. It wasn't a failure just not the huge hit a studio will want when they have other franchises they can back.

People never factor in overseas gross or DVD/Blu-Ray sales. This movie definitely made money. There are even some recent talks about it being confirmed... Not 100% on this but it looks promising.

shareThe movie is a failure because the US and European reporting of profit are completely different. In Europe movies are shown much longer in theaters than in the states so they don't see a profit until about 2-3 years after the movie first came out.

But I have a question about the movie. Did they end Sea of Monster with a to be continue ending (did they end it like there was going to be a part 3? I hope tbese another part) or did they finish the story (finished it like there wasn't going to be a part 3?)?
I assume you've finished Book 2 (and probably a few more) by now.
The film messes up the corresponding book's plot quite a bit (unsurprisingly), introducing elements in the later part that belong to later books. It was self-contained, but definitely left the plot open for a third film.
