Questions on the point of "You're Next" and the overall plan

Two questions come to my mind regarding the overall plot, but I haven't seen them discussed so I'll ask here.

My understanding of the plot:
In order to inherit the money, the two brothers hire some (3-5?) professional killers to create a seemingly random home invasion by psycho serial killers where all of them family except them and their girlfriends survive.

Correct? If so:

1) What's the point of writing "You're next" in the first house and then the family's house? Would there have been any difference to the plot or the police investigation if it wasn't done? It seems not to make a difference one way or the other.

2a) Do serial killers go house to house? I would think killing two family's next door to each other would make it seem less random and more pre-planned.
2b) Is there such thing as packs of serial killers? I thought they are lone wolves. Wouldn't it being a group, rather than a single person, make it seem more pre-planned?

Hope someone has some answers, otherwise, I'm thinking there's no way the police would not see this as planned.

1) It's a little overkill but they probably are trying to make if obvious that the two crime scenes are connected. Plus, maybe they just wanted to mess with the remaining people.

2a) People in try to hide the main victim(s) among other victims. Guy wants to kill his wife but it would be obvious that it was him. Over the course of a month he shoots three people around town. Then he shoots his wife and two other people. He thinks he'll get away with it because there were many victims and it'll just look like a serial killer.

2b) Serial killers don't usually pick a person a random. It's pre-planned a lot of the time. Charles Manson got a group of people to murder others. Bonnie and Clyde. Gerald and Charlene Gallego. Wolfgang Abel and Marco Furlan.

They wrote you're next to make it seem like random killings by a lunatic as opposed to a hired hit. One character states this in the film though it's easily missed. They aren't serial killers per we, more like hired hitmen trying to make it look like random acts of violence. Great movie though

1) They wanted to make the two crimes connected to try to throw suspicion off of Crispin. I think it would have changed a lot because if just Cripsin's family died then it might be obvious to the police who did it. The "You're Next" writing is to make it seem like these crimes will keep going.

2a) I don't know. We don't know the extent of the plan because of Erin's interference. If the serial killers did just go to those two houses, I think it does make the whole thing seem less random but it might still throw them off of Crispin's and his accomplices trail.
2b) There kind of has been, like cult killers or partners. Yeah, being in a group would make it seem more pre-planned. But we don't know if the police know there was a group of killers though.

Basically, I agree a lot with what the first replier said.
