I'm sure black slave owners showed more compassion. But it all comes down to how serious you took your bible (as reflected in 12 yrs a slave). If you were a good christian, you beat your slaves equally. Meaning, according to scripture, you beat your good slaves the same as the bad.
There were about 200 confirmed black slave owners. "Made up so whites feel better"? Like who? All slave owners are now long dead. Who needs to feel better?
If you're wondering about what black slave owners did to their own slaves, then yes, it would make some feel better because they can point and say, "look, the black owners treated their property the same as we did, so why not focus on that?"
Folks who ask those kinds of questions are usually the ones to tell blacks to get over slavery, it wasn't that bad, black participated in the slave trade, your ancestors were well-fed and were treated properly, etc.
You hear the same rhetoric from Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, and from various accounts from tour guides at southern plantations. It's nothing more than random right-wing talking points as far as I'm concerned.
The black slave owners, if there really were any, probably treated their slaves much more fairly and decently than the typical white slave owners. I am white, and the racism that still exists in this country derives from the twisted beliefs of that time and those beliefs make me sick to my stomach. Things need to change!
I saw a program on a black celebrity (I don't remember who unfortunately) where they traced some of her lineage back to freed slaves. There was records of her ancestor owning slaves, but as was pointed out this was often done to keep families together. There were laws in place (going by memory here, so I may not have it 100% right) that said a freed slave had to move to a different part of the country, and so often freed men would buy up their families and keep them slaves in deed, but in reality they were free.
That's not to say there weren't *beep* slave owners who were black (hell, it's common knowledge that the starting point of the slave trade in Africa was black slavers), but I wouldn't assume all black slave owners did so to keep their own people oppressed.
It's actually NOT common knowledge. Black people and dumb liberals think prissy white proper Englishmen traversed the African jungle to capture all the citizens of Wakanda with harpoon nets.
