Poor McCain

I always thought John McCain was a typical right wing nut like Palin and the base. But after watching this film I realize he was a decent, reasonable guy who made a huge mistake. If he was to run again, (with someone with a brain)he would make a pretty good President.

LOL a big reason he lost was his age in 2008. In 2016 that would be an even worse problem. But he was happy with Palin and his still happy about Palin and does not believe he made a mistake and when he saw the Couric interview blamed Couric and did not drop palin from the ticket immediately. So he was fine with Palin not knowing anything and was proud to stand with her.

I think the world would be in a much better place if he had had two terms rather than Bush II.

Your basing your entire opinion of a man over his portrayal in an HBO film?

reply

Not really, he has been a public figure for decades, plus he would have been nearly 10 years younger back then and his VP pick ould not have been viewed as so important.
Plus the simple fact that a pig's bladder on a stick would have probably made a better POTUS than Bush II.

Actually, I always thought he was a decent, reasonable guy, and not at all a nut. He still is. I don't really think he would be a very good president, but he's a pretty good senator.

As for him standing by Palin recently: that's an instance of his decentness (which, sometimes, he might be accused of overdoing). Look at his POW experience: he's a loyal, stand-up guy to a fault. Even if he thinks Palin was a dolt, he'd never throw her under the bus.

Actually, he may never "throw her under the bus," but he has implied that it was a big mistake to choose her as a running mate and regrets it because she was so difficult to work with. One time he was asked who he thought the new Republican presidential candidate should choose as a running mate, and he answered (sarcastically) "Sarah Palin."

Having read the book, I agree with you, but I don't think he'd be a good President. One of the main reasons I think he lost was age. He was simply a tired old man who couldn't keep up with the harsh regimen of a presidential campaign. Obama was young, in good health, and full of energy. I think that, and the general disdain for the Republican party, were the main reasons the McCain campaign suffered from such a strong lack of direction and, ultimately, failed.

McCain was an old man, but Palin certainly was the game change that vitalized his campaign. McCain may have been old and not likely to win, but I think it was Bush that killed any chances of a Republican getting elected.

I agree. And obviously the GOP does too. Notice how there aren't campaign ads showing Mitt and W all chummy, with W endorsing Romney, like the commercials with Obama and Bill?

McCain may have been a good president, he seems like a decent guy. But I think W ruined the Republican party's chances for years to come.

Well, I followed the 2008 election and from what I have seen and known from him, is he was fairly decent. I may not have agreed with some of his views, but has been one of the best Republican candidates to have ran within the last 8 years. He mostly had 4 things going against him: Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, his age, and inaccurate thoughts of Asians after he served. You really should not judge someone without knowing really anything about them, as well as by watching a move or even a documentary about them. Also, I am not sure he would have been a good president for us then. I think Hillary C would have been great, then this year Barack O.

They did make him seem very likable in this movie and I did feel sorry for him for that Palin fiasco.

He's definitely right-wing, but part of the reason they went for Sarah was to appeal to the wing-nut faction (Tea Party) who thought he was too moderate, especially on social issues like abortion. Similar to bringing in Paul Ryan so Romney could play center while Ryan could reassure the far righters that there was someone looking after them.

Sarah revitalized his base (Joe-the-Plumber fake types) and probably got him as much of his vote as we was likely to get.
