SPOILER ALERT! Re: Ong

Ong is killed because? Since the box is refused, but Ong is killed, the motive is revenge. Are we to infer that Ong actually staged the first robbery, causing his partners death and the revenge is on behalf of that partner? Or another reason?

I need to re-watch it, but I got the impression that it was just a robbery gone wrong and the one-eyed bandit wanted revenge for Ong killing his partner.

Thanks! I need to re-watch too as now I don't understand my own question. But your answer is making sense in some dim part of my brain and is appreciated. In any case, I thought this movie, well...quite good. I'd hate to write a Hollywood esque review of it. It is a class unto itself.

Just finished watching it, and my take on it was that the staged robbery and the shooting that took place instead were unrelated. The shooter was the one who escaped from the previous robbery where his partner had got killed, and was p!issed off that Ong had killed all his mates, so was out to exact revenge.

The timing of the revenge assault at the same time that the fake robbery was planned is co-incidental, and a bit annoying in terms of credibilty of the plot. The reaction of the stage robbers (for want of a better term) to the shooting appeared to be shocked and as they freaked out they jumped back in the car and drove off at high speed, ignoring Oscar. That reinforces in my mind the idea that they were not involved in the shooting.

There is nothing to suggest that the first robbery was staged, and that Ong opportunistically took the box - it was just the sole survivor of the original group of robbers with a grudge that we saw.

This is correct. Quite a coincidence that he'd show up just as he was planning a fake robbery, but there it is.
