Why does Sophie still get those cheers in pretty much every episodes?

She sometimes even gets the applause twice in a single episode.

Don't get me wrong, I am in no way trying to throw hate on this show as I do like this show, but seriously, is it written in her contract that she must get those applause or do they just do it for some unknown comedic reason? Because regardless of the reason, it's getting very old, annoying and stupid. I mean, they started doing that since the middle of the 2nd season and they're still doing it NOWADAYS.... I mean, like, come on, enough is enough... 

If by chance, this show is performed live in front of an audience, then isn't it possible for them to just edit the applauses out?

Seriously, I am not trying to hate on this show, just thought it is annoying.

It is performed in front of an audience, and as far as I know its not possible to edit out the applause. The audience really likes her.

SOTY rules!!

Ugh, really? First of all they do takes. You really think it's live? Like, live live? Like if someone accidentally falls over or sneezes or craps themselves they HAVE to air it? XD

Second, they have a billion microphones on everyone and the audience, they can easily post-edit turn down the sound (or cut entirely) on cheers.

Third and most importantly, the cheers at her entrance came on so suddenly it's just obviously something they're pushing by prepping the audience. Considering how many people hate her on this board, I doubt that many people attending the show think she's so super-awesome they should cheer. There's no way it's a thing they're spontaneously doing on their own.

They probably wanted a Kramer character that would become a phenomenon so they're shoe-horning it in artificially. It's so forced. XP

But you know, do it enough times and people will start believing it. Like you.

Whether they find life there or not, I think Jupiter should be considered an enemy planet.

Aka fonzie in happy days

reply

But Fonzie was the soul of happy days, the protagonist, everyone else was bland... However Sophie is bland and full of *beep* thing is, whenever she enters the crowd is shown a bright "applaud" sign and like sheep they *beep* and clap their hands.

Plus the Fonz could do stuff like start the jukebox with his fist.He battled Mork from Ork..jumped over the shark...I wish Sophie would jump the shark and fall in instead and get eaten

Sophie's entrances must be a parody on old sitcoms - otherwise I don't know why they'd do it. Cracks me up though - it's one of the best gags in each episode.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.

I hear you man.

Or Michael what's his face that played Kramer on Seinfeld. The cheers for him got so loud they had to ask the audience to calm down because it messed up the actors going into the scene.

reply

Like some people have mentioned, I'm sure it's a nod to/parody of old sitcoms where the audience would cheer whenever a certain (sometimes more than one) character entered a scene, like Happy Days, Seinfeld, Married With Children, Saved By The Bell and so on.

I've got nothing against God, it's his fanclub I can't stand

All multi-camera sitcoms are performed in front of a live audience. And yes, laughs and cheers are mixed down to avoid stepping on the next laugh. However, the showrunner and producers have decided that they want this audience reaction.
The warm up guy prompts the audience prior to cameras rolling for those scenes in order to get that reaction every time. He also most likely tells them not to do it for certain scenes where it wouldn't fit or would step on another line.

reply

They do that because the ASM at the side of the soundstage holds up a sign that says, "Cheer." Yes, live studio audiences are cued. And, yes, the laughter is also amplified & "sweetened" before it makes it to your TV.
