American Boring Story: 1984-ish

What a disappointment. No atmosphere, too much and too little going on. The story, set design, clothing, writing, make-up, all mediocre. This had more in common with The Goldbergs than 80s slashers. I thought Murphy was a horror fan. The intro was the bomb though, they should've hired whoever did that to make the show.

I like it so far throwback to horror films

What ruined it for me was watching 80's slashers for 2 months in anticipation of the season so all those movies are fresh in my mind. On the one hand I see a lot of references to various slasher movies but overall it lacked jump scares, weight, atmosphere, and punch. Like the dead hiker pinned to the door found by Emma Roberts, she barely had a reaction, same for me, because there was no weight to the scene. She walks in and there is a guy pinned to the door, oh my, better go tell someone. Compared to body reveals in Halloween, F13, or Sleepaway Camp movies, it was a lifeless scene. No dread or tension leading up to it, just.. here's a body. And it would have benefited from some post processing to give it a grittier appearance. We have TV shows like Glow, Halt and Catch Fire, and Stranger Things that are set in the 80's and knocking it out of the park, I expect more from AHS.

reply

Weak. But I will give it a try.

reply

I bailed out on AHS years ago b/c it was going too overboard. But b/c of the reviews, I decided to try again with this season. Idk. Despite being stuffed with all the tropes, it strangely doesn't feel like that period in film at all.

reply

Yeah same. I think Murphy is the kind of person, like Eli Roth, that needs people to keep him grounded. Big ideas are easy, execution is tricky, and this is poorly executed and isn't the first season to have that problem.

reply

I wonder did the hitch-hiker time travel? Notice his attire was 70s themed???? I think the lady who bought the camp, killed her husband. She possibly did the killing 15 years prior and pretended to be a victim by Mr. Jingles. I hope this season doesn't disappoint me. We all know how it could start good and just go down hill !

reply

I guess the hiker was a counselor at the camp previously that escaped.

I'm sure it's somehow going to tie into the wave of devil worshipping hysteria that swept across the U.S. in the 80s.

reply

LOL, you were so right about this season being another shit show! I still need to finish the latest episode. Laughed hard when Jingles gave the Night Stalker up!

reply

Just another run-of-the-mill ghost.

reply

Right on the money!!!

reply

it started good but they are shoving way to much stuff into such short episodes. Just too many twists.

reply

It didn't even start good IMO.

I think there is just way too much going on. Would it really have been that hard to make a straight forward, 80’s inspired Slasher?
Why in the fuck is Richard Ramirez here?

reply

Well that's every season.

reply

That’s definitely true. I guess I find it especially bothersome here as a Slasher fan. So unnecessary.

this 100%

There is a lot going on right now. Too much. We are only through 4 episodes.

reply

After the 3rd episode I wasn't thrilled w/ all the twists. But after the flashbacks during this episode I was fine with them. Richard getting the tree branch through the head topped this off as the best episode yet. Unfortunately, when he rose from the dead that made my eyes roll.

reply

I don't know, of all the terrible things this season, a devil worshipping murderer worked the best.

reply

I watched the first 3 episodes last night, I wasn't impressed. Don't know if i'll bother with the rest.

reply

Ep4 wasn't any better, just more twists and turns and not much story.

reply

Thanks, Doesn't bode well for the rest of the season. I might come back to it but I'll leave it for now.
