Mehhhhh I'm being tortured with porn!!!

Please stop using the term torture porn when referring to this season, you clearly have no *beep* idea what that means. There's been four characters that have had sex all season if I'm not mistaken, and they've been some of the mildest sex scenes this show has ever depicted. Furthermore the term you are looking for is gore. It's been a staple in the horror genre pretty much since they figured out how to create fake blood several decades ago, and it's something fans of this show have been begging for for years so just stop. If you simply must use the term torture porn I have to refer you to 'Hotel' there was significantly more of said term in that season than this one, which hasn't had any. I get that seasons of this show aren't for everyone and this is a message board so everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the imbeciles are shouting extra loud this year. I've been pretty quiet during this season but I feel it is my civic duty to educate said mother *beep* on their incessant complaints of this season that have no basis in reality. I'm not sure if there are just way more children watching the show now, or if it's just a bunch of Gaga fans waiting for another of her music videos, or what. Been a fan since Murder House and my only hope is that your moronic shouting doesn't ruin this show for the rest of us. Ryan Murphy and company, if you are listening, this is one of the best seasons this show has had in years, please keep up the good work...And now, back to your regularly scheduled program.

One of these things is not like the others. Torture porn does not refer to actual porn...

Furthermore the term you are looking for is gore. It's been a staple in the horror genre pretty much since they figured out how to create fake blood several decades ago, and it's something fans of this show have been begging for for years so just stop.

Show me the receipts. Also, gore is not the only type of horror. Horror also evokes emotions of fear and dread via tension, suspense and dark imagery. I'd argue that after a season like Hotel that many felt was devoid of actual horror and too glamorous a lot of fans would have been happy for a return to any type of horror at all, not just gore.

I've been pretty quiet during this season but I feel it is my civic duty to educate said mother *beep* on their incessant complaints of this season that have no basis in reality.

Really what you mean to say is that you don't appreciate actual discussion about the show on an internet discussion board if someone is saying something you don't agree with. Fact of the matter is, nothing anyone says on this message board is making it back to Ryan Murphy. Fans and casual viewers alike come together here to discuss elements of the show, to share memes about it, etc. etc. You have nothing to fear from a few people voicing perfectly reasonable (even just to them) complaints.

Sorry all I'm working today and had to wait for my luch break to respond properly.

People have been screaming torture porn improperly here for going on two years now. It's not torture porn it's gore like I said before. Torture porn is a stupid *beep* term people try to use as a club to bludgeon something they don't like much like 'pseudo-science' or 'conspiracy theorist' which is used in an attempt to discredit anything that goes against established dogma, it's lazy.

I would love to show you the receipts but the moderators of this board purge threads pretty regularly, which you would already know if you've been here for more than five minutes. Nowhere in my previous statement did I suggest that gore is the only type of horror. One of the things that makes this show so great is their ability to change styles every year which they've done again this season, so it's pretty stupid to claim that the show sucks because of it. There have been plenty of threads over the years complaining about the lack of gore or it's use as a counter weight for all the sex like people complained about last year, ask anyone that's been on this board longer than a year.

I'm perfectly aware that this is a message board which I've already stated. People are more than welcome to complain about this show whenever they want, just don't make the rest of us look like idiots while doing so. If you have valid complaints which some have been that's fine, but many of them are perfectly unreasonable because they don't make any god damn sense. As far as nobody on the show looking at these boards goes, this is where the fanbase of this show originated. Call me a dreamer if you want but there have been several instances where fans here have suggested things that the writer's have gone on to use, especially in the earlier seasons when the fanbase wasn't as big, hence me saying "if you are listening".

So thank you for attempting to educate me on my own thought processes, but everything I stated before stands.

It's okay henny. I'm not living on here like some people do, so you take all the time you need to reply.

That's not technically true. I mean, I'm sure people have complained on these boards about torture porn before, but torture porn itself as a term isn't one like "conspiracy theory" used to discredit something or rail against horror in general. Torture porn doesn't even refer to porn, it refers to excessive and gratuitous violence in place of actual storytelling or creating tension and dread through things like atmosphere and implied shock/horror.

One of the things that makes this show so great is their ability to change styles every year which they've done again this season, so it's pretty stupid to claim that the show sucks because of it. I agree with you that one of the fabulous things about this - and any anthology show really - is its ability to switch up styles again and again. I also have been around, I don't doubt or refute that people have complained about those things over the years. What I take issue with is applying those requests for more gore during previous seasons as an argument to defend it here in this season, because the storylines and tones are so different from season to season. One of the reasons why I take issue with episode 7 in particular is that they forsake character development and tension in favor of upping the ante with violence and gore. The argument that there's too much of that - aka, torture porn - makes sense when you apply it to that episode. You can't discredit it just because someone complained that there wasn't enough gore during Coven or Freakshow.

I'm perfectly aware that this is a message board which I've already stated. People are more than welcome to complain about this show whenever they want, just don't make the rest of us look like idiots while doing so.

Trust me, there are plenty of people I've come across all over IMDb that need no help in looking like idiots. Especially those who are so quick to cut down others just because they don't care to hear what they have to say.

You are very naive if you think that writers and producers from television shows - or even major mainstream actors - are reading these forums. These boards are host to tons of trolls, for one. Secondly, there would be a whole host of legal issues if a writer actually got their ideas from a fan forum. Thirdly, you can bet that if they're anywhere, they'd be somewhere like reddit where the community is larger and they can interact through official channels, such as with an IAMA (I am a "ask me anything") event.

So thank you for attempting to educate me on my own thought processes, but everything I stated before stands.

It's sweet that you still think that. :)

Yes, I have known of cases where the writers from Mr Robot have been on the reddit forum. Of course never to get ideas, this is well after the season is written, just to look at members theories. They have even acknowledged an individual who had predicted a theory correctly on one of the Mr Robot after shows.

reply

Yup, the creators of Black Mirror also did an IAMA event shortly after the premiere of Season 3 of Black Mirror. It's a semi-official channel where they can answer whatever questions they choose about something after it's already been put out there. It's done that way so that they don't get sued for stealing a random fan's idea. Plausible deniability that they ever saw/had access to the theories before the episodes were released for the public.

reply

Shouldn't have included the conspiracy theorist part I mostly used that because it's another abused word. Actually from what Dani's research would seem to suggest it was originated to describe porn specifically the money shot. Either way people have been using it to describe a plethora of different things mostly sex like they complained last year and w violence this year, both incorrect. The violence fits perfectly this season. When you have people that butcher others w a meat cleaver, human sacrifice, and cannibalism, those are all extremely violent acts they should be portrayed that way. Now if it serves the season like I'm saying here it does then it simply can't be torture porn. I don't think two seasons is too quick to cut someone down either, it's been a long time coming. You can call me naive all you want, Murphy has commented on fans theories or suggestions while seasons are ongoing during his weekly interviews. Whether it be imdb, reddit or twitter they definitely take notice. However AHS didnt have much of a twitter folkowing in the beginning, and correct me if I'm wrong bc I don't mess w reddit very often, but hasn't that site only blown up in the last two or three years? That would take it out of contention too. This pretty much leaves imdb, and fan mail which I'm not sure is much of a thing anymore since the invention of social media.

These points aside I feel like were pretty nuch agreeing on all the important stuff at this point.

reply

The money shot comment from Edelstein wasnt to say torture porn includes a money shot but was simply an analogy. Porn is a vehicle for sex on screen, and sex requires the happy ending otherwise the viewer would feel unsatisfied is what he suggested. 'Torture porn' is a vehicle for torture and gore, and the money shot is the victim/victims ending up with the final ejaculation of blood. People then confused that because of his derisive use of the word porn. He was just taking a stab at Roth by implying he cant tell a story/write a plot, and the term became a runaway train. Other critics then picked up the term when they hadnt even seen Roth's movies, like that broad in one of the articles I linked, and it then became totally bastardised. I've even seen comments that WEstworld is torture porn because robots get killed and people have sex in it. WTF? It goes on and on.

reply

What thoroughly confuses me about the term "torture porn" is why it's such a new thing, why the phrase itself really didn't become popular until the last decade. Movies with hardly a plot and a bunch of gratuitous graphic violence? Movies that date back to the late 50s and early 60s. Slashers, B-films, and literal torture films all date back far before we started using (and abusing) this term. In literature, the Marquis de Sade's work has seen its share of derision and praise, and yet never have I heard the term "torture porn" to describe it even these days.

I'll just finish this and then we're all off to heaven. All right?

reply

The term 'Splatter' was around way before the term 'gorno' (which you probably know). I dont know why they changed the term but came about as recently as Hostel, Saw and the like, I think. Then it started getting misused by any tool who simply didnt like gore in film. Now 'porn' is used to describe anything - food porn, clothes porn, chocolate porn, real estate porn...I kid you not, I even saw 'jaw porn' to describe photos of that emo actor in twilight. Facepalmed so hard I fell off my perch.

reply

"Splatter" is quite fitting a term, and it I don't think its intentions were to show derision towards a work. I've never heard of "gorno."

food porn

I'll just finish this and then we're all off to heaven. All right?

reply

Splatter was just the style at the time.

Gorno is gore porn.

Torture porn was coined by David Edelstein when critiquing Roth's Hostel.

I saw an article a while back claiming film critics are doing away with the term torture porn. Good. It's so misused these days by people who dont know what it means and just use it hysterically that it's lost all meaning.

This season is not torture porn, Hotel was though

FINALLY SOMEONE ON THIS BOARD ACTUALL KNOWS WHAT TORTURE PORN IS! When I made a thread saying I didn't like Hotel because it was torture porn, I got so much hate and "wrong"s. Anyways this season isn't torture porm but Hotel was.

reply

Neither of you know what the term means.

I didn't like Hotel because it was torture porn

And there it is. I didnt like the gore in Hotel therefore it's torture porn.
Wrong.

reply

No...

reply

If you people want to see real torture porn, go check out that new tickle website documentary that just came out. Scarier than this show's ever been.

Less than forget. But more than begun.

reply

I hadnt heard of that. Good god the faux outrage re 'pornography with clothes on'. Jesus wept.

reply

The definition of "tickling" should be changed to sadistic torture.

"You better not be lying to me, boy. I'm in a dick-shooting mood today."

reply

For slow lorises it is torture. Poor little buggers.

reply

That sounds like a Circle in Dante's Inferno.

slow lorises

Aren't those venomous? Like, they lick their ankle-glands and kill things?

"You better not be lying to me, boy. I'm in a dick-shooting mood today."

reply

Poisonous, not venomous:

Brachial gland of slow lorises

The flexor surface or the ventral side of the elbow has a slightly raised but barely visible swelling termed the brachial gland (Hagey et al., 2006; Krane et al., 2003). Observations from captive slow lorises show that when the animal is disturbed during handling, they secrete about 10 microliters (μL) of clear, strong-smelling fluid in the form of an apocrine sweat (exudate) from their brachial gland . Usually, male and female slow lorises assume a defensive stance when disturbed. They bend their heads downwards between uplifted forelegs, rubbing the brachial gland exudate onto their head and neck. Slow lorises frequently lick their own brachial gland regions and also wipe their brachial gland against their head. The brachial gland is active in lorises as young as 6 weeks old (Hagey et al., 2006). Illustration shows the brachial gland (dark patch) on the ventral side of a slow loris.

The first time I saw a vid of one being tickled on fb I thought it was so cute and was about to share it.😭 Then I started reading about the tickling is torture.

reply

Oooh, ok thanks. Nature is pretty crazy.

Awwww...Poor fuzzybutts.

reply

Mehhhhh I'm being tortured with porn!!!

Can someone really be tortured with porn though?

reply

Haha no Gabriel they can't, yet another reason this term needs to die.

reply

I think the 'wont you think of the children' brigade frequently torture themselves with porn. They like it, then torture themselves with guilt for liking it so campaign against it so no one else can watch it, then watch some more.

Here's the review that kick started the name

Interesting read.

Snuff 102 is worth a look as well. I didnt like it at the time but when I looked back on it I realised it asks the interesting question - how much is too much.

reply

I understand that you are frustrated with people referring to this season (or last) as torture porn. It seems like the buzz word for this season just like "anachronistic" was for Freak Show. While I am not going to argue that this or last season is or isn't torture porn because it is just an opinion, I will definitely say that you made it clear that you as well have no idea of what that word means and you are being a bit overly confident about it.

Please stop using the term torture porn when referring to this season, you clearly have no *beep* idea what that means. There's been four characters that have had sex all season if I'm not mistaken, and they've been some of the mildest sex scenes this show has ever depicted.

You started you paragraph clearly associating the word "porn" in "torture porn" with sexual activity. That is FALSE and in case you want to check here you go:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splatter_film
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=torture%20porn

All else you said stands just fine and you can have a discusion/argument about it. But let's not get confused about the definition because you cannot really prove your point if you are wrong right out of the gate.
