The hate for Hotel

I don't get it. The reviews for this season make it seem soooooo bad, but I'm rewatching it now and I love it. Definitely better than Freak Show or Roanoke, and (though many may disagree) Asylum. It's stylish, the characters are great, and I like the storyline a lot. I don't know, just my opinion.

reply

I agree. The hate that it got was unnecessary. I wouldn't say it's better than Roanoke or Asylum but it's definitely up there as one of my favorites.

reply

same here. if it weren't for school and tests, i probably would have rewatched it at least 6 times already

reply

How could people hate it? It was the best of an already excellent show

Death lies dormant in each of us and will bloom in time. Odd Thomas

- Lady Gaga's wooden acting.
- The lack of plot that needed sex scenes as filler.
- The "twist" of the Ten Commandments Killer's identity was seen a mile away.
- The Drillbit Demon which contributed nothing to the show other than the shock value of his first appearance. At least Rubberman, Bloodyface, Twisty, The Minotaur, and Mr. Piggy were relevant to the plots of their season.

The only good thing was the soundtrack. Lily Rabe was pretty damn good as Eileen Wuornos, too.

I think Lady Gaga's acting is subjective. I personally think she's good, not phenomenal, but good, and there was definitely a plot (but I can see where you're coming from with the sex).

reply

(but I can see where you're coming from with the sex)

I disagree. 1. People go to hotels and have sex. Seemed perfectly normal to me. 2. It's always been a sexed up show because it's a psycho sexual thriller. 3. The sex scenes were pretty tame (not including the drildo rape in that. Rape goes into a different category IMO)

reply

Plus vampires are notorious for being highly sexualized. They not only crave blood, but sex as well. Ever since Dracula, vampires are seductive and sexual creatures.

I also remember something about vampires being bisexual. So it didn't start with Hotel, but it's part of the vampire mythology.

reply

Yes to that👍

Like her music or not, the woman can certainly put on a performance.)

Yes to that, Wildy. I thought she was really good as the countess, and I agree about your comment re La Lange. I'm not a fan of that style of music, but when Gaga sand the American anthem for the superbowl I got goosebumps. Knock out.

Sang, not sand. My typing has gone to hell.

reply

Couldn't have said it better myself. Gaga's acting was very convincing and totally not like her actual self. It sucks people can't see past her alter ego.

I must admit, I was very upset about the casting because I thought it was going to be another singalong.

Hot line bling was great.

I called Asylum 'Gleefied' because of the name game. The singing in FS I didnt think of as Gleefied because 1. it was pretty bad (on purpose) and 2. It suited the big tent style of show. When Gaga's announcement was made I thought it was going to go full on Glee, which I dont even watch. I think I saw one episode. Very happy it did not go that way.

I didn't mind the musical aspect of Freak Show (it kind of reminded me of Rocky Horror Picture Show), but it was the anachronistic songs that were off-putting. I get that the artists of those songs labeled themselves as "freaks" like Lana Del Rey and David Bowie, but it was still really weird to me. The only song that fit was Life On Mars.

reply

I liked it, but not as much as the anachronistic music in Westworld rescored in an old west style. I freaking love the music in that.

reply

I'm trying to think back if I liked any of the characters. I sympathized Liz and Scarlett. There were some good moments, but that's why I don't look back on it fondly. I wasn't really invested in anyone.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

I agree with this, there were some characters that I liked but it was hard to get invested in some of the main characters. Personally by the end Scarlett was the only one of the Lowe family that I didn't hate.

reply

I guess I can't really judge because I stopped watching that mess after the demon raped the guy. Before anyone brings up the rape in season one, that was completely different for two reasons, one Vivian thought she was sleeping with her husband at the time and 2 it was a major part of the plot for the whole season. The rape in season 5 was just for shock value not to further the plot. I don't find rape entertaining. That being said, this is how I rank the seasons
Asylum
Murder house
Roanoke
Coven
Freak Show
Hotel.

reply

Is it fair to rate a season you haven't even watched? Besides, if you had watched the whole season you'd know that the rape and demon in general served to the plot a great deal, as well as some of the themes.

reply

That's why before I gave my ratings of the seasons, I gave the disclaimer that I did not watch all of hotel. Seeing as the rape was completely dropped and not mentioned again in the 2 episodes I suffered through after, I highly doubt it was used as a plot point but as I said I can't be curtain.

reply

The addiction demon had a purpose, thus the name. You cant say he had no purpose when you dropped the season. That's the point Gabe was making.

And every season has been rapey, not just 1 and 5.

reply

I never said the "addiction demon" didn't have a purpose. I said the violent rape had no purpose. It did nothing to further the plot, unlike in season one which was not violent and was a huge plot point with the 2 babies/who's the daddy thing. Throwing a rape in just for entertainment/ shock value is unnecessary and inappropriate

reply

It wasnt in there for 'entertainment', and he DID have a purpose.

Honestly, why are you trying to argue when you didnt watch the season. It would make more sense if you said you didnt watch the full season therefore you cant rate it, or just give it a zero.

reply

Can you read?!? Again I will say, I didn't say the demon didn't have a purpose, but that SCENE did not have a purpose, AT ALL. Like the poster below stated, if that scene had been cut, it would have done nothing to make the plot not be able to be understood. The fact that that scene caused people to stop watching that season proves that that season was the worst.

reply

Oh calm down! You didnt see out the season so you cant comment on the purpose. Strike a light. You dont like rapey scenes. That's fine. I dont like them either but to blow off a season because of a rape scene when every season has had rape scenes...just say you didnt like it and move on. The OP asked why the hate for hotel. That's all you had to respond to, not give yet another ineffective 'my ratings' which so many people seem obsessed with.

That goddamn supermoon is still affecting brain chemicals.

I'm out.👋

reply

And I have the reason I personally hated hotel to the point I even stopped watching it. Are you really that ignorant or just illiterate?

reply

What was his purpose? I watched the season and I can't recall any "point" to his character other than "he appeared after Sarah Paulson's character sewed everyone together."

reply

His purpose was to give that other poster such faux outrage that she dropped the season, never to find out what his purpose was.

reply

Yeah I'm not really sure it did make any difference. Like if that scene was caught, we still would have understand that addiction monster was a bad thing. I think the only person we saw the addition monster hurt was a very minor character. It wasn't necessary to show the monster was bad. He could have inflicted pain without whipping, so I agree with you. And if you were so grossed out/disgusted you didn't want to bother to watch, then of course you would still rate it and rate it low. If you stopped watching because you started working Wednesday nights, then that's not the show's fault, but if they wrote something you didn't like enough to not be interested in continuing, the show misfired.

reply

He also raped the other junkie - Sally.

reply

Yeah, it was part of her story. While I'm not sure that the rape scene was strictly necessary, seeing how disturbing the demon was made us understand why Sally would do what March wants, because he could protect her from it (though they really could have explained that better).

reply

That's exactly how I rank them! Great minds... hahaha

I love and am eating it up like every other season of AHS.

As for the haters, well, they gotta hate.

Very likely they adored one season and cannot endure change, in that every season is not a continuation of their favorite. Very sad.
