We saw it in Prometheus, Covenant and now Romulus. They've thrown the whole alien life cycle out the window in favor of fast paced action and creatures going from being a few inches long to full size in a matter of seconds or minutes.
Even the face hugger now lays an egg in and it hatches almost instantly. Isn't the whole point of a parasite to feed on the host?

shareThe android Rook tells them that compound Z-01 isolates the alien's ability to accelerate or slow down its metabolism at will. You could make a case that they bioengineered them in the lab to grow and mature at a very rapid rate (perhaps, to harvest more Z-01).
That said, I agree, it really did push the 'suspension of disbelief' boundary you need to watch movies like this.
It is definitely a bit too fast. They need to go back to Alien and see how long it took poor Kane to be chestbursted after being facehugged hours earlier.
