Question about Finch in the finale

After the last episode many people asked when Finch met up with his old girlfriend was that an afterlife thing and he was already dead? why was that? as a Lost fan i think if it had been another actor playing Finch no one wouldve thought that but because it was Michael Emerson that thought got ingrained in peoples minds who had watched both shows

I read it as he finally got a chance to live out his life with Grace. I didn't think he was dead at all.

I took it as he was finally quitting his role in POI and trying to live his life. I think that was a promise he made Reese, and he intended to keep it when Reese bit the dust.
