Should I watch?

I've heard great things about this show, but I usually don't like procedurals (unless they also have lots of serialized storylines in there too). Is this just a straight up procedural, or are there serialized aspects too?

reply

Yes! There are "procedural" elements but, even from the beginning, there are hints of A Larger Story. Indeed, there are long-running story lines. Also: Interesting characters, beautifully shot New York City as the background & hints of dry wit....

The show is streaming on Netflix. Watch it!

If you can be patient with the start, little hints of things to come star dropping pretty early in the show and by the end of s1, it is still a procedural, but the serialized aspect is in full swing and continues to build until the end. Lots of action and even the so called throw away eps have tibits of important information in them. Enjoy the ride!

First off, only you can make the decision to watch or if you'll like it. People can tell you why they like it or they can tell you to watch it but the ultimate decision on if you want to watch it is up to you.

It is a procedural with serialized aspects to it. It had the HR storyline (s1 - s3) and then the Samaritan storyline (through the end) that run throughout the episodes. I would say that season 4 is probably the most serialized (coming close to being "soap opera-ish" in my opinion). Ultimately it is a procedural so there is a good number of episodes that are basically stand-alone. But if you decide to watch you do need to watch from the beginning to understand where the characters are coming from by the end. (The character of Elias first shows up in the 1st season and is a completely different person by the end of the 5th season and you do need to watch to see changes like this in all the characters.)

Based on your stated preferences, it doesn't sound like the kind of show you'd be interested in.

There are some shows with procedural aspects that I like. I'm not opposed to every procedural show. iZombie and How to Get Away With Murder are two of my favorite shows, and they each have case-of-the-week episodes quite frequently. I like them because they have an overlying story that covers some ground in every episode.

I just don't like shows like NCIS or CSI, where it's case-of-the-week dominant, and overlying story is nonexistent or moves at glacial speed and is very far in the background.

Other responses seem to suggest that there is a fairly prominent main story, so is the main story something that tends to progress on an episode-by-episode basis, or is it few and far between?

Actually, I was just screwing around to see if-you-were-a-real-live-boy.

So many hit-and-run posters come on Boards and ask some variation of that same question. Then never return to acknowledge, or comment, or follow-up...no matter how many, how detailed, or how varied the comments they received.

Anyway...

In answer to your question; the show has elements of both.

Person of interest is, in my opinion, one of the best TV shows ever. It's one of the few shows that not only didn't get worse with each season passing it actually became better and better

…and you get your share of humor and self-irony. The show touches important topics but doesn't take itself too seriously so that you can be sure to have a hight level of entertainment.

Yes.
I hate procedurals, and for a few years I though POI was just that so I'd never bother to check it out. Then I watched Lost and became a fan of Michael Emerson. So I wanted to see more of his work and that's how I figured I'll try and watch a couple of episodes of POI.
And guess what, I loved the show, it's nothing like dull and bad executed NCIS.
So I think you definitely should give it a chance.

Hey troyplafond, not sure if you have started POI yet or still deciding, just wanted to add a little something. I am not a huge fan of procedurals but I will watch them from time to time. This show is definitely not a procedural, although it does start that way. I will admit that I had a hard time getting into POI until about half way through the first season, then it fell easily into one of my top 5 favourite shows.

As it was already stated, you have to decide if you want to give POI a chance, but if you do, make sure you watch at least the first season before you decide if it is something worth continuing.
