What happened to Finch's finances?

I'm just starting season 3, two episodes in. So now that Finch and the others have new identities why is he relatively broke now? What happened to his billions? And I forgot.. How exactly did he make that money to begin with? I mean I understand he and Nathan founded that company, but what did he do exactly that made him so wealthy and, how/why did he lose it? Again, just starting season 3, so if they explain that later then allow me to find out on my own. Thanks

I suppose you are starting on season 4 not 3?
Obviously the software company of Nathan and Finch was very successful, we are never told what they did exactly. Once Harold tells John that he invented Social Media to feed the machine with data - if that was a joke I'm not sure.

In season one ep 6 (the one where Zoe is introduced) Harold makes a big deal against this corrupt pharmaceutical company (he says "thanks to you I will never have to make another deal again").

His money in season 4 is probably still there but he cannot access it because of his new identity.

He was wealthy before that. In one of the flashback scenes, Nathan closes a deal and says something like, "You know this means we will never have to work again."

Basically, Harold was an early tech billionaire.

The scene you're talking about wasn't a flashback, but a simulation of what would have happened if Harold had never created the machine.

Lol yeah, season 4 I meant. Yeah I remember him implying that he invented social media as we know it now. He think he also said something like he brought the internet to the world where prior to that it was only available to the government, or something. I figured his loss of fortune had to do with his new identity, but I'd also have thought that someone like Harold would've been able to have his money follow him or at least still be able to access it under the old identity.. But then perhaps doing so would make him visible somehow to Samaritan, or something.

I guess with Samaritan dead, he returned to his normal life of wealth.
