So Hannah sees her former best friend sexually assaulted , and this is obviously a traumatic experience for her. So she then decides to show up at the rapist's house party?
Sorry, this might have been discussed before, but the series just lost me right then and there.
I agree with the OP. I was liking this show until that happened. It was almost like she wanted Bryce inside her. Who gets into a rapist's hot tub? I'll tell you who, individuals who are craving the touch of a man. This is why she couldn't tell the counselor she was raped. She wasn't. As a girl, it drives me crazy when society only blames guys when weird things take place in the coital realm. It makes females look weak and helpless. All Hannah did was blame everybody else for her stupid decisions. She chased after idiot boys and pushed away the good guy who treated her with respect. She was a ridiculous fool who only had herself to blame.
When I first read this I thought it was crazy but I kind of see where you are coming from. One of the things that struck me about Hannah is she talks about how she isn't a slut but when she gets at a party with Clay they get pretty steamy pretty quick. It was their first date if you can even call it that and they were going to do it right then and there. Hannah stops not because she doesn't want to go that fast but because she thinks she will "ruin" Clay. Later, she shows up at a rapist's house and undresses down to her under-where and gets in his hot tub. It's almost like she wanted to have sex so she put herself in that bad situation and then wanted to use that situation as more of a reason to kill herself.
... so she put herself in that bad situation and then wanted to use that situation as more of a reason to kill herself.
I agree with this explanation. When she went for a walk that evening, she already half made up her mind about the suicide, and this was the last nail in the coffin.

Self-destructive behavior is associated with feelings of guilt. Alex went through something similar when he picked a fight with Monty, and when Clay was watching him getting beat down, Clay also had a fantasy of getting beat down.
I don't really, it's more an explanation into why the writers include it in the story they want to tell. They want to show how some kids struggle to deal with guilt and shame because they are still trying to understand how to communicate those feelings. A lot of them eventually figure it out without having very negative consequences, some do not.
So they communicate by knowingly making decisions that will likely end badly, then transferring blame onto others? Her character makes very little sense in terms of her actions and emotions . I have a hard time sympathizing for her when she makes these reckless decisions and then in calculated fashion blames others. Her tape should have been 3 reasons why. She should have laid blame on Bryce for raping her and Justin for not intervening for Jessica. Lastly, herself for not intervening during Jessica's rape and for what Bryce did to her. She could have redeemed herself by taking Bryce down for what he did. She then has the audacity to go and try to blame the school counselor for not coming after her when she gives a vague accusation she wants to do nothing about. Looking back on it, while the stuff that was done to her, not including the rapes, was wrong, they didn't belong in why she killed herself.
As far as alex goes, eh, there was more going on with him than what was said. I did find him convincing as a character.
She blamed herself several times throughout the series. As to how she got there, this character committed suicide, so it should be clear her reasoning skills are not fully formed. I don't think they are looking for the audience to take sides with or against her, the story is supposed to be frustrating and tragic because these are young people who do not always react to situations in the best ways, only the ways they know how. The show highlights some of these behaviors (particularly the ones related to suicide) and tries to explain where they come from. It's not always black and white with this show. While a tape could be for a specific character, when we see the whole story, there are usually multiple characters including Hannah who share the blame.
Not only does she do that, but instead of immediately getting out of the tub when left alone with him , but she stayes until things got out of hand and barely put up a fight. Zach was correct to say that she brought some of the bad things that happened on herself. She had options that she could have taken, such as protecting herself, vocally defending herself or retaliating against those who did her wrong. She goes about feeling sorry for herself instead of taking action. She was evasive and unhelpful when she went to the councilor about Bryce, so while it it sad she took her own life, she allowed herself to be put in a pathetic state.
No people don't react in the best way in awful situations. From memory she wasn't comfortable with what was happening, should she have said the word "no" of course! But that doesn't always come too easily, she struggled I remember and gave up, the guy was stronger than her. I cannot believe what I'm reading in this at the minute, yes she saw jessica get raped and made a mistake going to the party but that does NOT mean she was asking for it!
Asking for it? No, partly her own fault as she put herself in that position? yes! She barely struggled and had she at least screamed it would have dissuaded him from raping her. How does it not come easy? She yelled at Zach when he was trying to be nice, she yelled at Clay when she was having a dramatic episode and she yelled at Marcus when she was at the diner with him. Stop giving her excuses and give her some responsibility and agency.
