Alot of these 'gypsy people' are thieves!

They have a very bizarre life style. There are many irish travelor and gypsy groups in the US, mainly in the south where it is warmer because they live in trailers. The men are known as "scammers" they travel around in their trailers scamming people - especially the elderly and then they move to another town. They are very hard to catch! Hundreds of them have the exact same first and last names which makes it so much tougher to catch them. Alot of them make their living as professional criminals.
Several years ago there was a teenage travelor woman who tried to scam Disney World in Florida out of millions saying someone broke into her hotel room at Disney and raped her and beat her up. She staged it - it was her brother that she allowed to actually beat her up and then she had sex with her boyfriend for rape "evidence". They were all in it together and they were going to split the money. She almost pulled it off and got millions in settlement money when someone she knew turned her in.
What kind of life to these young, uneducated women have? By 16 or 17 they are married and a stay at home wife with children (in a tiny trailer) while there equally, young uneducated new husband takes on menial jobs or goes around scamming and stealing from people!
How do the get out of the educational system? Alot of the kids quit school at 11 or 12! Why do the authorities not check into why they are not in school? And they are many under age brides. Why aren't the authorities stopping that!
Anyone notice how seductive and sexy the little girls are dancing?
How can they afford these huge wedding dresses and weddings and communions? That's a good questions. I would think that many are on government assistance and they pull off scams to supplement that. Many have very large families. Why they prefer to live in a trailer I guess is because they can move it from town to town to avoid getting caught. Plus, how can they afford any other type of housing but trailers when a wedding costs thousands of dollars and they are poor to begin with! They prefer communial living similar to a cult. They do not like "outsiders".
I am very interested in learning more about their overall life styles not just the lavish weddings and such. A very interesting show.

Perhaps you should learn more about the Roma culture before you make a comment about us all being "thieves". I am Roma and I am college educated, I am a Desert Storm veteran, I am employed as a project coordinator and I also claim my Roma ethnicity on every census.

reply

IA, that is such a stereotype.

I find the show very interesting as well. This could be a very interesting reality show filmed here in the U.S. I am wondering why they insist their trailers do not have a bathroom, in these camp grounds do they have a main bathroom and shower? How inconvenient would that be? I am looking forward to the other 4 episodes and soon! Keeping an open mind but cant help humming Chers "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" song

reply

They said that a bathroom in the camper is wasted space because they considered it to be unsanitary. They likened it to going to the bathroom in your kitchen. I have no clue where the camper dwelling folk take care of bathing or going to the bathroom...

Unless they cook in their bathrooms, I have no idea what this means. Going to the bathroom outside is more sanitary? In a community that I suspect spends a lot of time outside?

The night is a very dark time for me.

reply

This behavior is certainly NOT limited to being a gypsy!

Ever been in an RV?

Even people renting RV's for road trips will usually not use, or limit the usage (especially to urination only.) The way these mobile units are set up sometimes comes into play, how you have to clean it out etc.

Remember , they are actually living in these homes for a long period vs. just a road trip vacation type of thing...

reply

I understand why people on vacations might limit it (although part of me feels like "Just hook the damn thing up"), but permanently using the restroom outside? No wonder people don't like living near these groups.

The night is a very dark time for me.

nmbv:

One of the girls said they go outside for the bathroom------how sanitary must those camping grounds be after they hit the road?

reply

That's why a lot of people give them a hard time.. because of the way they leave so many sites after they leave. And who gets to clean it up? Why the taxpayers of course, which is unfair as the travellers don't pay taxes into the system. The ones who buy land and set up their camp there, fair enough, but still, if you live in a municipality and you're using their sewage system, water supply, schools and roads, you should be paying taxes.

Gypsies are thieves and scammers. I've personally witnessed the following:

-Putting dents in people's cars, then offering to fix it for payment
-Stealing car parts at the scene of an accident
-Gypsy kids swarming a Mexican food truck and trying to steal food

reply

I've never witnessed gypsies myself, but my parents used to tell a story...

Both my parents' families owned community grocery/general merchandise stores in the south. One day, when my parents were dating, my father was visiting my mother at her parents' store when a group of Gypsies came in. My mother and her family had never dealt with or even seen any before, but my father and his family had dealt with them extensively at their own store so he knew what they were most likely about and what they were most likely to get up to. He warned my grandparents and a couple of others in the store to 'pick a gypsy' and not take their eyes off them even if another was trying to capture their attention...because that's what they'd do: Come in a group and while the majority of them made a lot of ruckus, ask a million questions, and basically keep your attention, one or two would slip behind the counter or office and steal you blind. Sure enough, my dad caught one of the men trying to open the cash register and while my grandfather threw him out, my father turned to see one of the women slipping into the back room. He grabbed her by the shoulders, took her to the door and, so I've been told, literally KICKED her out of the store. They left and never came back! Now I'm sure that not all gypsies are like that and stereotypes, in general, don't speak for all people of a particular group...but in this case, it's a good thing my dad did stereotype them because this particular group certainly lived up to it.

Was that not odd? lol ... I was wondering about that, also. That's one reason I hate camping ... lol.

Me, too. My ancestors did all the "camping" for me. I prefer modern amenities, including plumbing.

reply

lol georgialass - I told my husband if he could bring my bed, fan, shower, toilet, air conditioning system, tv (with cable), etc. I might consider going camping with him.

I like how you camp! I really don't understand the appeal.

As for the gypsies and travelers, I don't understand the lifestyle. Why would people want to live in such a nomadic way? Why would they not find a place in this big world where they can settle down? They probably wouldn't receive such bad attention if they didn't draw that attention to themselves. They could settle down with each other like the polygamists have.

My bet is that they are like many other people who are outrunning their bills. A lot of people move around a lot so their creditors can catch up with them. It's just another way to work the system.

reply

lol ... I don't understand it either. Even when I go on a vacation for a week or two, it's always so nice to get back home. I seriously could not imagine living in a travel trailer for the rest of my life ... Seriously, that would drive me nuts!

I seriously wonder about that. I can't imagine they make a whole lot of money to spend on those lavish weddings (some might, but I can't imagine all of them do). I do not want to accuse anyone of any wrongdoing, but I do suspect some of them have figured out how to scam the system, creditors, and other people ...

Lol, I've always adored camping! And I'm determined to someday realize my dream of living a nomadic life on the road, with some sort of trailer/recreational vehicle. As attached as I am to the place I grew up in and still live (but not for too much longer...), I do believe that I could eventually give up ties to any particular location for a life of travel, freedom, and adventure.

I have a travel trailer that my family has used extensively for many years. The dear old thing has certainly seen better days, and we'll probably end up getting something new within a couple of years. But the notion that having/using a bathroom AND cooking inside the same trailer is unsanitary, sounds silly to me, personally. It's always best when you can hook it up, but even when you can't, it's always been manageable (e.g., with a porta-potty.) Our trailer's bathroom has a sunroof with a powerful little fan attached. The worst part has always been the odor of the blue liquid you have to put in the toilet. But it's never been like using the bathroom in the kitchen, lol.

To answer someone else's question, yes, a bathroomless trailer (which were more commonly made in the past) would indeed just use the extra space for the other areas (like a bathroomless house or apartment would xD), or possibly even to add in some other desired feature(s.)

I'm not surprised to read that travellers such as the ones appearing on this show use outhouses/communal outdoor facilities. Heh, I mean...there are some times and places when you can get away with just the great outdoors, buuut...you do kinda need some type of plan if you're not gonna utilize trailer bathrooms. xD But it's true, ya know...seems as though these girls would find a place for bathing, toiletries, freshening and dressing up, etc., very useful. :/ So it's quite surprising...

I'm a really big fan of all types of recreational vehicles and mobile homes. :3 I have several books on the subject, and some include chapters on gypsy caravans. The ones featured in those books are truly awesome and beautiful (but indeed, don't typically have bathroom facilities.)

Anyway, I caught one episode of this the other day and can definitely tell that the word "documentary" does not describe it. Have to admit that on first glance the word "gypsy" conjured up somewhat romanticized notions of the Gypsies (though I knew not to expect Esmeralda, exactly.) From skimming around online, I see that lots of other people were disturbed or appalled by much of the seemingly "backward" behaviors displayed on the show. I was aware of the unfortunate negative stereotypes of the Roma and their culture, as well as that of the travellers in general, but a program like this is doing more to generate further distaste than to help anyone. According to another message, what we're seeing is an unfair and inaccurate representation of a small portion of the Irish Traveller group--and the rest of the people affected by the more undesirable depictions and labeling of this show's "gypsies" are rather riled up about it. And rightly so, I should think. I respect differing cultures and detest undeserved stereotypes and prejudices as much as any sensible person.

Everyone's also wondering about their income sources to cover the elaborate ceremonies, dresses, and whatnot. Certainly would be interesting to find out. I don't want to assume that "they're thieves and they steal, scam, run away endlessly to escape debt, etc." Prefer to think that they honestly earn it--and maybe, given their reduced expenses, they're able to use a good bit of it on those extravagant, pricey-looking things they evidently love so much, lol!

I like you, Um. I like largeness...

I wondered the same thing! They must have a community facility or something because having no bathroom also brings up the question of where to bathe, brush your teethe etc.

These girls primp in a very grand style. Even if they don't use an indoor potty, you think they would at least want the space to take advantage of for storage or just to use as a vanity space to do make-up and hair.

They could even convert the shower into a place to hang their fancy dresses or something. I wonder what a trailer could come with instead of a bathroom that would give more space - other than a closest. Or maybe the trade off makes for a bigger kitchen or bedroom space, a laundry facility - an advantage of some kind?

Unless they don't want to worry about a visitor asking to use the restroom? If they are travelling , they could just stop somewhere but as far as long term living - I don't know.

It seems limited to the small travel trailers. The houses, apartments and bigger mobile homes seemed to not have the bathroom issue.

reply

This article says they use an outdoor facility.

"Who knew, for instance, that travellers don't use the toilets in those trailers, but prefer outhouses instead, deeming it unsanitary to do one's business so close to where one does one's cooking."

Also, according to the same article, this show is a documentary. I have seen documentaries on their culture, this show doesn't even come close.
