From my point of view, he hasn't changed except that he finally (FINALLY!) seems to be *starting* to see the consequences of his approach to life.
Exactly.
Walt has experienced one traumatic event after another from the murder of his wife to the attack at his house and now fighting for his job. He's made wrong decisions for the right reasons. If anything, this season has showed how those decisions have come home to roost like with Billy. Skirting justice or more appropriately defining your own justice is never the right decision though it may feel that way at the time. His crusade for justice in relation to Nighthorse may be his undoing because he's defining justice instead of letting justice take it's course.
Walt is definitely self-centered and egotistical but he's lovable and kind at the same time. The dude is complicated and it makes for great tv. It doesn't hurt that Robert Taylor plays him to perfection, either.
