Newbie questions

1. What originally created the tension between Walt and Branch?

2. I don't think this is a 'Don't *beep* where you eat.' type of circumstance. Many a woman/man is involved with 'the boss' plus it's a small town. So do you agree with Vic's assessment of that?

Number one question, Branches dad had a lot to do with that, he wanted his son to run for Sheriff and I think the land that Walt owned was in that also. But Branches father was always a wedge between them. Wish I could work him back in the show somehow, because I lost a lot of interest without him in there this season.

reply

I wish they could work him back in, I'm sorry

Another question. Why hire a newbie from Philly rather than a local? And wouldn't locals have some 'issues' with an outsider? Seems it's a small town and loyalties run deep.

I think the father of the deputy is an antagonist. They have their part in the story that the storyteller uses to drive a wedge between two primary characters. I admit they cast the show well.

Probably not a very deep local talent pool, considering how Zach worked out and who his competition was for the job. Plus, Vic is an experienced homicide detective.

reply

In all honesty, I think the pool is deeper than you think, i.e., Branch, along with 'the Res' has pretty good 'coppers' too, but it's a story angle / arch and that's why we accept it. Plus not only is she cool, she handles being a newbie well and others have accepted her without issue.

I liked Zach a lot. I thought he was going to make a great addition. Too bad he didn't live up to his own professing like how Walt called him on it at the end. He was right but his hot-headedness got to him. Does he return?

In your comment / post you have an Edit feature. Try it, it's fun... and my best 'friend' in the whole wide web world. I tend to think faster than I can type but can type pretty fast as well. Not to mention my spelling and grammar suck. Try the Edit feature. There is another favorite of mine too, Ignore. This forum shouldn't need it, though, and that's a good thing. No Trolls or criminal minds up in here, ya know? ;)

Another question. Why would an African American non-Native be the only one in charge and therefore debunk the entire training operation? For me, that made no sense.

GFW

If Branch was deputy before the election why does Walt's reelection get him booted from work?

GFW

reply

How can you continue to work for someone after you've told everyone he wasn't fit to be your boss? That well was good and poisoned.

reply

So, you're saying his running against Walt was a flag that Walt wasn't the best for the county they work in but he was? Okay, I get that. Branch embraces 'technology' and 'change' but in them parts is that what works best? Seems like in that one episode where Henry takes to horseback riding to get up mountain, because it is the only all-purpose 'vehicle,' that proves how the west, for the most part, wants to remain wild.

Once Walt sees how a cell phone can benefit him he embraces it, as seen in an episode in season two, he can handle it.

I remember thinking at the time that if I was a voter there and only knew what a typical voter would know that I'd vote for Branch. I'd only need to look at Walt's slovenly, unshaven appearance to think "This is a man who is falling apart. He needs to be replaced". I'm still not convinced even today that I'd have been wrong.

reply

I'd say his look is more typical of Sheriff of a county. He's not running a country, sitting in an office cube, or touring Capitol Hill Senate lobbying chambers. He's a gumshoe detective who must blend with his environment to be included. Branch was spotted when he tried to go 'undercover' at the rodeo as the hot shot he is. Is he troubled? Yes. Is he clean and sober? Yes. Does it pay to judge a person by their appearances only? Never. My vote would have been for the seasoned veteran until such time his cases started remaining un-solved. From what I could see he hasn't not closed a case yet.

Look at his behavior this season. His indifference to his daughter after she took the job on the res. His explosion against Henry, his oldest friend. His obsessive pursuit of Jacob, who, granted, we're still not sure about. Sure he's been a good cop but this is the behavior of a man heading toward a breakdown. And there's the stubble, which drives me nuts. Either shave or grow a real beard. Stop looking like someone waking up from a four day bender!

Anyway, fun to talk about. Too bad we'll have to wait an entire year for any resolution. I discovered this show after season 4 and was able to watch them all in succession. Now having to wait between seasons will be painful.

reply

Okay, kstrumpf, but as the word "newbie" plainly and honestly is offered, why would you think I'd be interested in spoilers?

Just so you know I stopped reading after the second sentence. Why would you do that to me?

GFW

reply

Wow, I'm really sorry. I just assumed you were caught up, not sure why I ignored the newbie part. Seriously, I apologize. My bad.

reply

Not that you have read all my comments, but my questions are from seasons one and now two. Also, even if you shared you could have used the tools provided in the comment box while composing. One is marked "Spoiler" that if you pace it on highlighted text of future episode plot give aways it would cover it then it would be up to the reader to view it by running cursor over it. :) See below.:)

Not reading but the first two sentences I can't account for Cady's want to go to 'the other side' but she is a lawyer and might want to give them a hand. I don't think you need to read into Walt's behavior, as he's his own issues to deal or not deal with, as indifference. He is allowing her to sprout in her own direction as all good parents do. Their only responsibility is to raise their children to live without them. He did.

Hi, GFW. Haven't seen you in a while. Glad you're enjoying what is one of my favorite shows, although I haven't seen the last two seasons.

reply

I agree about the poster. I think the standard of poster here isn't like at other threads.

Yeah, I'm still quite active on IMDb with this 'new' account. ;)

I'm only in Season 2. I have many I rotate viewing on so not to get burned out on it. I've a 'buffet' of sorts on a Lazy Suzan!

GFW

reply

What's with a "public defender" for Henry? Eh?
Why not Cady?

What, no pooling money for his defense? Walt can tend to the horse covering 'whatever costs' but not for his life-long friend? Eh?

GFW

reply

Okay, Cady steps up. But these guys were willing to cash in retirement monies for something else but not for Standing Bear? Okay, it was to show Branch's big heart. Got it.

Also, were these written before the information age of overwhelming technology we're all, pardon the pun, saddled with? If so, did they alter the stories any to accommodate?

GFW

reply

kstrumpf, that's big of you to apologize. A lot of people on the internet just get huffy and start calling other people names. It would be a better world if everyone acted like you.

reply

Amen.

reply

Okay, I'm not a newbie anymore as I enter Season Five.

The Highway Man is free to listen to on YouTube and you can detect Craig's humor more the books than the show. Henry's comes across and oftentimes Walt's but not as much as in the readings. They have Vic down pat, Ruby too. Sadly they did not bring in the best character from the books to give us all laughs, "Dog."

I think I'm far enough along to give this some response now.

I wouldn't call it indifference because he cares. He cares about her. Her future. Her reputation. Her working both sides. Her inability, eventually, share and it worries him. He also is moving on with his life and feels he's losing her to the other side, rather than 'his side' but it isn't surprising due in part he's friends how he is with Standing Bear. I think it more than anything concerns him due to his deep distrust of Jacob. Jacob hasn't been guilty of anything he's 'charged' him with. Jacob is pro-Indian. He's anti-White Guys. But he's EDUCATED in the white man's world and Jacob thinks, perhaps, he can, like they say, find the 'loopholes' and, worst, perhaps, just maybe, lure his daughter into a relationship with him.

The 5 o'clock shadow is the standard 'all man' look these days.

His lack of a cell phone, and I could swear he got one in one episode, annoys me since he uses everyone else's but kind of feel that's for comedic relief.

In the episode where Donna goes "missing" he apparently suffered some head injury, yet we never see a bandage and has periods of 'fog' or 'fading' along with the fact he can do all he can with bullet holes in his side makes me wonder, along with you, about his state of mind. My guess is Donna will help him with that, if she gets found.
