I love this show but I always get afraid when a show starts to go on too long and this show ever since A&E cancelled it has always been under threat to be fully cancelled. Season 6 should be the final season so they can wrap up story lines and so we can get some full closure.
I think it just depends. It might be able to go 7, depending on where they go with the story. The fact it is only 10 episodes per season makes a difference as to how many seasons they go with it as well.
Overall though, I agree with you. Breaking Bad was just right at 5 seasons. Bate's Motel is also very smart not drag things out and wrap it up at 5. Then you have shows like Dexter and Sons on Anarchy that just went on a couple seasons too long.

I'm thinking 8-10 seasons sounds about right but it's only 10 episodes so they could do 12 without it being overdone. Then a once a year two-hour movie...forever.
sharesince there's nothing remotely LIKE longmire on television or in film, i hope it keeps going for many years. not thrilled with all the cliffhangers at the end of this season, and i question the need for them to keep us on the hook. i would still keep watching anyway, and it feels like they just stopped mid-season on so many story lines.

With ten episodes, and developing half dozen main type characters and bit of their back stories this show can go on for a few more seasons. They did a great job with Nighthorse this year (GREAT JOB , put it up there with any top show with his character development). How about more of that next year. Maybe a bit more on Vic pregnant reflecting on her past (why she is the way she is with men). Maybe more on Mathias as cop on the RES. Those main stories along with daily life of Walt could carry this show for few more seasons.
