WTF is taking Netflix so long for renewal?
The single season renewal is problematic at best. This really should be a multi-year renewal.

shareThey were not speedy in announcing renewal last year like they have been with some of their other series. Longmire has never gotten the support publicity wise and promotion wise as it's other Originals. Longmire, if you can believe some the analytics that are available about viewership is no where near as popular as some of Netflix's other Originals like Stranger Things, OITNB, House of Cards, etc.. Longmire is aging having completed 5 seasons in today's series landscape. I do think they may get renewed for a season 6 but I think if they do they will be told if it's a wrap up season or not. The actors contracts are up for renewal after S6 which means the series will get more expensive. I suspect if they get a S6 renewal that may be it. Netflix has announced that Bloodline will end after S3.
shareYou bring up some interesting points. I thought Bloodline was cancelled because of the expense of filming in Florida? Interestingly, I think if Netflix actually got behind Longmire with exposure on social media, etc. the viewership would grow exponentially. It's a bit frustrating. Obviously, I'm biased and think it's the best show available but it's definitely better than some of the other shows that are Netflix originals....sigh
shareI too like Longmire better than some of the other Netflix Originals. I personally don't care for OITNB or House of Cards and I'm not on board with the DC and Marvel Comic book based series on Netflix or anywhere else either but they seem to appeal to a large group of viewers. At this point Netflix's promotion or lack there of is what it is and I doubt will change 5 seasons in. I actually think Netflix promotion of Longmire is worse than A&E's was and A&E's was minimum at best.
As much as there is a lot I like about Longmire, especially the cast, I do think the writers have gone off track and the writing could be so much better. Overuse of cliffhangers. Dragging out storylines a bit too much. Overuse of PTSD storylines. Taken some of the beloved main characters way off track almost so much that their personalities seem totally different. Killing off Branch was a huge mistake. The whole Irish Mob plot this season was pretty unbelievable. They were actually making Walt unlikeable this season and his own worse enemy. The quality of writing has started to lose me unfortunately.
One of factors in Bloodlines cancellation was the losing of filming incentives in Florida for sure making Bloodline even more expensive for S3. At least for now New Mexico has retained its incentives but I believe they are going to be discussed again in early 2017 by the New Mexico legislature.
Again, you bring up great points. I suspect there must be behind the scenes stuff we aren't privy too for them to make these creative choices.
I enjoyed season 5....a lot....but I don't know how much of that enjoyment was my absolute dread of season 4....
It's been announced they get a 6th and final season to wrap things up.
shareD E V A S T A T E D is the only word I can explain how I feel.
shareI was at least happy to get a season 6, but would have preferred more. Ten seasons at least.
Yup. Hoping this way we will have closure. Still ridiculously sad.
shareGo to Netflix and do a live chat. I thanked them for the season six renewal but mentioned how much I would have liked more seasons. They have to let everyone know about this feedback, there is also a place where you can ask for shows. There is also a media center, but not sure what that is.
And there is a lot to wrap up. Let see: Henry is staked out in the sun. Vic is pregnant. Will she marry Travis. Will Walt lose his job?. The mayor is plotting against Walt. Cady is in a sweat lodge freaking out. Is Nighthorse really a bad guy? Will Henry and Walt make and be friends? Will Gus get on death row? Will Ferg marry Meg? Will the Irish Mob boss get caught and who is the leak in the FBI? I want to see more of Lucian because he is a kick in the pants. Did I miss anything?
Life is for lovers, and lovers are for life.
I think the writers have run out of plot ideas. They are not only recycling plots from other series, they're repeating their own plots. The show has become more of a soap opera than a crime drama.
I thought the whole White Warrior plot was ridiculous. Killing off Branch was a mistake, but the bigger mistake was the way that they did it.
The New Mexico Film Board confirmed that a seventh and final season of Longmire will begin filming here in March of 2017. Looks like we have ten episodes to go.
shareYeah, it's the 6th season and it's the final and it sucks eggs they weren't given an opportunity to let the show find it's natural and organic conclusion which would probably be 8-10 seasons. I'm thankful for the sixth season, though. Don't want to sound like I'm ungrateful.
shareWhat do you think is Longmire's natural and organic conclusion and how did you determine it would take 8-10 seasons to reach it?
This is a TV Series and as long as the showrunners thought they would get renewed they would continue to come up with more and more new ongoing plot lines just like they did in S4 and then continued and added to in S5. They really loved their cliffhangers and overused them big time. The only way the showrunners would wrap things up is if/when they knew it was their final season beforehand. Now they do and we're lucky Netflix told them beforehand otherwise we would have been left with another cliffhanger like they did with S3. They had to know in prepping for S3 that they may not get a S4 when the episode order went down from 13 to 10 and the key demo ratings were below what cable/network shows desire and yet they chose to end S3 on a cliffhanger anyway. The showrunners know the business model that drives cable/network TV and it's advertising $ based on Key Demo watching it. Everyone should be nothing but grateful that Netflix took a chance and shelled out 40 million a season so we end up having 3 additional seasons.
I'm thinking maybe you should re-read what I wrote especially the part that I'm thankful there is a sixth season.
shareI read your post just find and saw where you said you were thankful.
You didn't answer my question about what you thought was the Natural and Organic end that would take 8-10 seasons versus being able to wrap things up in 6 seasons.
Here is what I mean by a natural and organic conclusion.
Beginning with season 4 the show began to slowly shift away from Walt as the central focus of every storyline and explore secondary characters. Season 5, dove deeper into other characters; Vic, Henry and Cady. While I absolutely love Walt, he is flawed, (more about that in a minute) the shift in gear to what makes Cady, Henry and Vic tick was refreshing and welcome.
One does not have to agree with the storyline but all of the characters are dealing with the repercussions of their decisions. The inevitable chickens have come home to roost and it is amazingly artful and interesting.
The common thread of Walt rescuing Donna which he was unable to do for Martha provided resolution for him so he could move forward. I would go so far as to say he was trying to love Donna but he knew it wasn't right. She, indeed, wasn't Martha. Walt realizing that his old ways..…the same ways that alienate all those close to him..…weren’t working anymore. So he was trying to learn and move forward but he was still stuck which is evidenced by his horribly selfish position with Cady and Henry.
Vic, finding herself single and pregnant from one of two men she has no desire to be in a relationship with and in a profession where pregnancy is really difficult. Seeing her bloom into the Vic that has been under the surface for four seasons was amazingly delightful.
Cady on the Rez, very much the symbolic warrior her mother was and finding herself in an inexplicably horrible situation she calls upon her father to help her, rescue her perhaps, and instead of helping he chastises her. She, unlike her mother, was able to fend off her attacker. She didn’t need Walt to physically protect her as she thought she did. Cady in that moment found her strength. She will be a force to be reckoned with. Cady and Walt are not resolved. They are two sides of the same coin, though, and that is very compelling. That is not a thread that is resolved in one season.
I use the words natural as the writers, in my opinion, have just now hit their stride and the characters are three-dimensional now so that their story is organic. All roads are converging into one and the biggest clue of all was the asymptote. They may not meet. All things may not come together. That, in my very humble opinion, is natural and organic storytelling and given the pacing of the show, I would argue that would take 8-10 seasons to come to a conclusion.
If one wants to argue that we should be lucky to have six seasons, I guess, on a peripheral non-cerebral level I would agree but if one wants to argue that Longmire has achieved more artistically, aesthetically, and authentically than any show in the past decade since The Sopranos (86 episodes) or the two shows that were specifically developed for 6 seasons; Breaking Bad (62 episodes) and The Wire (60 episodes) as an admirer of the show you would be hard pressed to convince me that we should be ok with settling for less of something that is so great. Longmire has genuine legs that have not fully stretched and 22 -44 more episodes would find them in a steady and comfortable gait allowing for a natural conclusion.
well for 1 season 6 is expected to be the last.
shareThey are showing a season six here on IMDB so it looks like it is going to be a go. It has been one of my favorite shows on A&E and on NETFLIX. I guess we shall see if they put an ending on it.
