The Troat

The rebels in 2053 knew that they had created a time machine, yet appear to have never tested it.
Mannix told Defoe to set it to 1890, and he did, even though Mannix appeared in 1889. How did Defoe know how to do this?
This would indicate that The Throat was a workable entity before Mannix intervened.
Why did the rebels of 2053 only use it after Mannix had passed through?
Surely they would have played it with before Mannix came along.

I also have issues with this whole scene. Why did Defoe put Hasan's life before everything? She might have been killed, but then Mannix wouldn't have gone through..

reply

Also, we got no explanation of why Defoe appeared in four different times, and not only one time. Mannix seems to have appeared in 1889 only. But Iris must have appeared in 2023 in addition to 1890.

No that was, surprisingly enough, completely ignored, being the whole premise from the get go.
I was thinking it maybe was because of the bullet being introduced? Metal (and stuff) did obviously interact with the process somehow (e.g. they arrive at their destination with nothing).

Also, the idea of symmetry; he returned 4 days after (as well as before), so we can only assume he will also appear three more times, symmetric to his 1890, 1941 and 2023 appearances. Also, he might even appear many other years, like a 1000 years before (and after). I mean, why four?

reply

Somehow when Defoe went in he turned into separate beings that each got transported to different times. Perhaps as the other person said, the bullet disrupted the process.
