Such unrealistic expectations...

No, not the owners, the Property Brothers. I've only seen a few episodes of this show and it's definitely a guilty pleasure, but I can't get over how the brothers whine that the clients have such unrealistic expectations. Um, you set those expectations, remember? The buyers thought the house looked like a dump and then you convinced them it could be their dream home (which is apparently what they are changing the name of the show to?). You told them that horrible fireplace/woodpaneling/bulkhead/wall/etc would be gone and they would have the house they wanted and then, whoops, you apparently didn't set aside any of the reno budget for structural issues or get a decent home inspection first so 25% of the budget must go to replacing the heating ducts. Imagine that, a home that's 40 years-old that has been badly neglected has some structural issues and needs more than just a facelift to the kitchen and bathroom.

I definitely enjoy the show and who knows how much is editting for TV drama, but I can't believe how there is constantly no extra money set aside for issues that may pop up. It never fails that the reno plan along with the stimated eprice of the house brings them up to the max budget. I've also seen several episodes where they think they can get the house for a steal because of what a dump it is (termites anyone?) and plan the renovation around the budget of an assumed lower cost then find out there are several offers and tell the buyers they'll need to come up with $30,000 more on their offer.

The Property Brothers apparently have never heard about the problems with pisspoor planning.

I have to agree with you, and that is why I stopped watching this program (and only watched it tonight because there was NOTHING esle on). Between getting tired of hearing the buyers whine about how they can't afford a good home while stating they have over $700,000 to spend on a home, and then the brothers messing things up with the purchase negotiations, and then the mismanaging of funds on the project after promising the buyers that they could put EVERYTHING from the dream home into the run-down house, but always failing to finish the entire house due to budget issues, well, it just turned me off. That and the annoying narrator that they FINALLY seem to have gotten rid of (I don't remember hearing her voice at all in tonight's episode. I'm glad. The show just didn't need it).

I'll add to that by saying that they show them a Million Dollar home first and then are surprised that their expectations are high??? Plus that home was $400K over their budget to begin with. That is just wrong.

When you're not concerned with succeeding, you can work with complete freedom.

I think for the money spent the Scott Brothers give the homeowners about twice of what they actually charge them. It seems like they barely even count labor costs in the overall tab.

It's all part of the gimmick. This show has a few of its own. All shows do.
