Property Brothers vs. Fixer Upper

The shows are basically the exact same premise. But I'm wondering why the woman on Fixer Upper can renovate an entire house for like 50k and on Property Brothers they always spend 100k+. Why is this? The woman on Fixer Upper does a great job and I really don't see her designs are better than Property Brothers. They're both very similar in the final results: very modern, clean, beautiful. If someone could explain...

It could be that the money quoted on Property Brother are Canadian Dollars. A Canadian dollar is worth about .80 cents in exchange. Also on Fixer Upper, they film in Texas and Texas is far cheaper to build than Canada or other states like California or New York.

reply

I actually like Fixer Upper better, just because they do spend less money and you see where the money goes! It seems like PB's just fix two or three rooms and they spend all 100k of the money they had.

reply

Yeah, Fixer Upper is better. She also does the outside of the house and all the rooms and bathrooms. If I wanted someone to renovate my house it would be her.

reply

I like Fixer Upper better too. I am really not into the modern aesthetic that TPB give nearly all of their remodels. Absolutely hate the plastic-looking chairs and metal stools they use so often. Ever heard of a seat cushion? At least on Fixer Upper, they use a lot of antiques and repurpose a lot of stuff. The decor is warmer and more inviting.

Can I interest you in a topical steroid from my lotion and unguent collection?

reply

Yeah! I hate the furniture, plus it's super expensive and ugly and like you said it's plastic looking. I like when Joanna designs stuff because it feels like home. TPB make it feel like a bachelor pad lol.

reply

Yes, very upscale bachelor pads, lol! That being said, as I am watching more episodes of Fixer Upper, I'm noticing that they also don't seem to be fond of stools with cushions or padding. Must be a design choice, I guess.

Also, I'm wondering why there is no message board for Fixer Upper? I can't seem to find one on here.

there is a message board for fixer upper http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4591390/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

it also comes up idf you go to flip or flop flipping vegas property brothers etc....there is a list of other shows that are similar...fixer upper is one of them!

I was just talking with my sister about this very topic a few days ago. Even if the dollar figures mentioned on PB is in Canadian dollars, it still comes down to less bang for your buck. I mean on Fixer, there's been episodes when the buyer has only 20 or 30 grand for reno and the house's exterior still gets an update. Not so on PB. I always notice when the home buyer is walking up to the home for the big reveal and you can still see how the crappie exterior hasn't had a thing done to it. The exception seems to be some of the PB episodes from the season filmed in the United States.

One reason would be the location. You're also not comparing apples to apples. The homes they're buying and renovating in Waco, Texas are generally much lower prices, therefore the renovations aren't going to be as high.

reply

It's well known that real estate prices vary greatly from one area to another, so the difference in price of the home itself is not surprising. The renovation, however seems like something that would be more evenly priced. If I buy a fixture at a Home Depot in Waco, does the same item cost twice as much in New York or Toronto?

reply

In New York City, no. We do have 8+% sales tax though. I think Canadian prices might differ slightly. That's why so any Canadians who live near the border come across to shop. Presumably the labor costs makeup much of the variation in costs between locations.

Fixer Upper is the best show on HGTV. As far as the other(fake) home renovations shows(FAKE) they're all scripted (FAKE), and editing Ass hole is the biggest Douchebag of them ALL! Did I mention that all the flip/flip, all the twin brother shows, all the house hunting, love/list it shows ARE ALL FAKE! PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS IF YOU THINK ANY DIFFERENT!

reply

Property Brothers work in big cities in overpriced regions of Canada and the U.S. Fixer Upper is in Waco, Texas, which has reasonable prices for both property and labor. If we were inclined to move to Texas, we could sell our unremarkable southern California tract house and live in a mansion in Waco, probably with our own lake.
