the two idiots that had a 1.4m budget, UGH makes me sick

Tonights episode was a couple that had a budge of 1.4 MILLION or something close to that, and they went with a reno. WTF is wrong with people. They could have gotten a much nice NEW HOUSE for that much money. Hell they could have had one built for them for that price or even cheaper but they go with a dump that was from the 1930s WTF is wrong with them.

And the house after it was done, i would never guess it was a 1.4m house, Id guess 750k tops. Sure the neighborhood could make a difference but when you are that rich, if you are not buying a brand new house and doing a reno on a dumpy house like they got, you have issues.

the couple was so annoying too, and seemed so fake.

It blows my mind people with that kind of money are so bad with it. I could have gotten a nicer NEW house for half that price , i cant imagine what I could get in Mass where I live which is expensive.

I live in Mass too, and 1.4 mil can get you a pretty nice newer house 20 minutes outside of Boston. Was this couple buying in a major city? Didn't see the episode yet.

The neighborhood the were in looked pretty nice at least on the outside but I think it was probably the worse house on the block kind of thing. I don't believe they said what city it was in. Not that I remember anyways. But still who is their right mind would pay 1.4m (the budget) to reno a house from the 1930s.

I could see if it was a newer houser like from 2010 and they want it done their way. Im surprised someone that rich would want to buy a house 900,000 and then reno it. And i cant imagine what the other rooms must look like that they didnt touch .

Watched this episode last night, that looked like a decent neighborhood and the house came out well. The upstairs looked way too tight for them to do a master suite though, especially since they made one bedroom into a closet. So if they did do an upstairs reno, it couldn't have been anything great.

At least he got his huge TV though, I guess.

There are many reasons why someone with that kind of money would want to reno rather than just buying new. For one, with a reno you get the design and custom touches YOU would want rather than your standard cookie cutter house that literally anyone could live in.

And if we're going to be honest, even with all their problems that come with time, older houses tend to be a lot more sturdy and more well built than the vast majority of houses being built today.

I bought an older house and this thing is a brick. I've had friends that have bought brand new houses (first owners) and after 6 months they start falling apart and have dozens of problems and cost double or more to maintain. I was floored to learn how much it cost to heat and cool one of my friends houses with their supposedly superior system.
Modern day builders are all about getting a house up in a week and moving on.

And just because you CAN go new, doesn't mean you are obligated to do so.

None of the houses that were shown to show off the neighborhood looked expensive to me. So when they said what their budget was, I couldn't wait to see how they couldn't afford a place in that town. The house Drew showed them not only stuck out like a sore thumb, but in no way was it 1.8 million.

I've lived all over and have seen the houses in the most expensive areas. No way could they not find a nice turn key house/Mcmansion/mansion for that price!

I just watched this episode and was shocked the house cost that much. Ridiculous! I wanted to smack that wife upside the head. 90 dollar wallpaper and marble countertops, a bedroom/closet. People like that piss me off. I'm so sick of these young people that only want the best of everything. Sorry but life doesn't work like that.

reply

Ah, but you're dealing with people growing up in the entitlement generation. They want it all NOW and don't grasp that that's not how things work. Thank technology and poor education for people's loss of the grasp of reality for this new trend.

The government's supposed to provide, and all that BS, dontchyaknow? 

Oh believe me I'm well aware of the self titled brats of this generation. It's very annoying and frustrating.

Do you realize that this show is produced in Canada so the money is in Canadian dollars? that 1.4 million is just an even million US. For many reasons, you can't really compare one's country's real estate market to another unless you understand the differences in all the real estate laws and taxes pertaining to real estate.

reply

If they bought a new house, why even be on the show... The whole premise of the show is to fix up old houses for wealthy people. Poor Jonathan would have no work to do... :)

reply

Have to admit, I saw this one recently and thought the same thing. They have over a million to spend on a house, they are being shown old broken down homes to refurbished, and these homes are going for 800 + -- and that just seemed crazy!

The more I watch shows like this the more I'm enjoying the "tiny house" movement; where you can buy a nice looking closet for 30 thousand plus. 😁

reply

Yeah, the tiny house movement. I'm seeing it all over the place now.
We're being brainwashed to think that's good living. Was that the American dream of our grandparents? To live in a 200sqft trailer? To sleep less than five feet from your toilet? Some jail cells are bigger than that. They're slowly conditioning us to get used to the $15 an hour "career". Wake up sheeple.

reply

True but at least you own your home out-right and don't have to worry about paying it off all your life .... I just can't see raising a family in a tiny house.

There's nothing wrong with debt. As long as people act responsibly with it, and stay within their means.

reply

When you are in debt -- you've already lived beyond your means.

That's a ridiculous comment. Average people haven't been able to afford homes paid in cash since the 1800's, and brand new cars pretty much since they were invented. Credit card debt is a modern invention. I don't believe in carrying CC debt more the convenience of 30 days. I have a half dozen credit cards just to maintain a credit score. The only one I use is AmEx for the perks. It's paid in full at the end of every month.

A lot of people, like me, would prefer a 1930s house to a new house. The architecture, details, materials, and workmanship are usually superior. However, I wouldn't choose the Scott brothers to do the work for me. They almost always rip out and replace most of the original elements that make old houses interesting (windows, flooring, tile, etc.), and by the time they're finished the place isn't recognizable as a vintage house anymore.
