Go to the NYTimes website and search "closed kitchens." I got it.
sharePersonally, I think it's a great comeback..... I'm just wondering if it really ever went away.
We have heard so many people over the years on HGTV say that they must have open concept living/dining/kitchen areas..... "It's so open! I can be cooking in the kitchen and keep an eye on the little ones!"
I'm sick of the same ole script. You have to wonder if all people really want that or if they have just heard it so often that they just THINK they want it because everyone says that is the thing to have.
I had an open concept floor plan for many years and personally, I hated it! I wanted that privacy in the kitchen area. While I clean as I go, I still do not feel the need to be out there on display with my guests while I cook. If they want to come in and help, that's a different story.
As far as the little ones go, If you are that concerned with keeping an eye on them then you had better bring them into the kitchen with you. They may learn something!
I'm older now and I LOVE walls! We especially chose our next home because it wasn't so OPEN. Our living/dining area is, but the kitchen is big and not visible to that. Soooo much better!
"Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night"
Every time on shows like this whenever I hear a woman say, "But I NEED an open kitchen to the living room/dining room/whatever room so I can see my children!" I just roll my eyes. You're cooking. You're supposed to be concentrating on COOKING. Further, how many children in past days were not CONSTANTLY watched over by their mother when their mother was in the kitchen COOKING because there were no "open concept" kitchens? They all survived. Children today will survive if they're not being watched 24/7, I promise.
I don't have an open concept for the kitchen. It's just not how my house is laid out, and I'm fine with that. It's not necessary. If you can HEAR your children, you and they are just fine. It's when you can't hear them that you want to stop what you're doing and go check on them because that's the time they're likely trying to get into trouble, lol.
EMOTICONS ARE BACK! YAY!
Children don't need to be watched every minute. I think, when I was a kid, my mother enjoyed getting away from the noise and into the kitchen to do her own thing for awhile.
shareI never liked the open concept. When I built my house, I purposefully made sure the kitchen and connecting eat-in area, which I use as an office mostly, is far from the main living space/great room. I'm all about personal space and solitude when I can get it. I think most people need that for their mental health and an open living space is counterintuitive for us solitude seekers.
~Keep some room in your heart for the unimaginable~
I don't like the idea that I'd be sitting on my living room couch, and I could see a pile of dirty dishes twenty feet away by the kitchen sink. It would be like going back to an apartment.
shareHave you posted this on all HGTV show boards?
shareI personally like open kitchens to family rooms, but still like formal wells as well. I moved back in with my dad after college and his 40 foot x 20 foot open concept family room addition with cathedral ceilings is beautiful. But he still has formal rooms that are nice.
Why wouldn't you want an open concept? Having people over is great. I make food. My friends and I stand around the island and snack and drink while a movie is going on. Or whatever. It's awesome for entertaining.
I'm an old fashioned person. I don't like an open concept where everything is just one big room. I see that on these shows and it looks like you're living in a warehouse. I like a separate formal living room and a separate formal dining room. A family room that isn't an extension of the kitchen. I like a kitchen where I can cook in peace and the smells don't invade the rest of the house. And I don't like a house where you open the front door and see the kitchen appliances and cabinets on display. As we say in the south, I think that's just tacky!
(Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.)
Joanna Gaines is the worst for that. Don't be in an earthquake in one of her houses. No doorways to stand in at all. I guess you can always dive under the gigantic table she usually provides! And it's so funny that she takes out the kitchen walls (and cabinets)and then has to build an island for storage. Low storage. Don't have a bad back!
