Well, the thing about Teddie I picked up from the way he was written and played was that he was a big man about town with the ladies and such, but he had a kind of heart of gold, and was a big softie.
Not the kind of guy who would want to be in a sham marriage and be running around the globe sleeping with all the women he could, when he wanted something else to make him happy all the time at home.
Here is a guy who stepped in to rescue the girls from the harridan weight matron when she was harassing Maggie; he tried to smooth over Maggie stabbing the drunk pax with a serving knife; Ted bailed the girls out of jail in South America with his own huge wad of cash; he was protective and worried about Laura going to Harlem by herself, so he took his own precious afternoon off to go with her; then he ended up handing over his greatly beloved Rolex to the shop owner in Harlem just to get another guy's engagement ring back for Laura!
Then, he goes up against that old windbag senior captain (who had the power to damage Ted's career) by pleading for him to leave Laura alone by telling the captain in detail how much Laura means to him to try to appeal to the man in him.
He was basically Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy doesn't marry a lesbian so he can fool around with other women for his whole life. He wants his Miss Bennet!
