This show was not given a chance

It was a great show, but the timeslot, etc, kept this show from catching on, I always looked forward to watching this. But at least we get a dvd set.

I totally agree with you Pan Am was a great show. I thought it was wrong for ABC to put it on Sunday nights at 9 going up against Football on NBC and CBS programming. ABC should have put it on Tuesday or Wednesday nights. I loved Pan AM a lot and look forward to buying the DVD.

reply

Thank you, exactly, because of those factors, it did not really stand a chance and that was too bad, as it was a great show, the characters, etc, it was cool to see that time period, I would have liked to see these characters evolve a little more.

reply

It was a much better show than the slotting suggested.

reply

Sure was, to put it against the final season of "Desperate Housewives" was not a good idea at all.

It's maddening to get into a great show, and have the network pull the rug out from under us. Why are there so many pieces of crap, like CSI, Criminal Minds, Law and Order, and others, that delight in detailing murder, blood, sexual assaults in graphic detail, and yet no space for a great show that detailed what it was like when flying was a pleasure, and not the dreaded airport "strip search" and sardine can joke it is now?

reply

Exactly, it was a great timepiece that should have been given more of a chance than it was, and a better time slot, they could have gone so many different places with this show, rather than cancel it, just when it was starting to get good.

reply

Yeah watching the show when they were in Berlin now. Good stuff. Wish it got a better opportunity. Should move it to the CW, everything stays on there.

reply

US tv is brutal, this series just did not take off and got canned. My wife enjoyed it and she was left disappointed.

Its that man again!!

reply

The show wasn't given a chance because it had the Mad Men comparisons stacked against it. The same with the show about Playboy, which I heard had been getting good when NBC yanked it from the air. And since both shows aired when Mad Men had taken that long break between seasons, ABC and NBC rushing to attract those abandoned viewers was a stupid move because MM is a completely different kind of series.

reply

I had never thought about it that way, but I can understand what you are saying, the same time period, etc. except it was centered around airline stewardesses. And people expected to see an exact replica of Mad Men. And you were exactly right about "The Playboy Club", it was a great show, and was getting even better when the powers that be decided to pull it off the air, and these shows were just as good, but like you said in their haste to attract these viewers, they must of jumped ahead of themselves and realized they did not have the budget, etc.

reply

Pan Am was much better than 'The Playboy club'. People have to fly to get places. They don't have to visit a club tied into a men's magazine.

So there was more potential opportunity to promote Pan Am. Imagine an era when flying was safe, fun, and glamorous!

reply

Point well made, exactly, this was not some seedy business, this was the hey day of flying and it was actually glamorous/fun. And the story lines were getting stronger with each episode, and the characters even more interesting. With "Desperate Housewives" winding down, there was so much growth potential, I hate they gave up on this so soon.

reply

"I hate they gave up on this so soon."

Yes. Me too. They are only at episode 8 over here, but I love it.

reply

Exactly Duchess. I watched the 3 episodes of the Playboy Club, and it was warming up nicely, then NBC pulled the plug. It's all about making money fast, with formulaic crap. No wonder cable and satellite channels have made such inroads. Goodbye the former Big 3 networks, you suck, and you won't be missed.

It should have been given a second season on a probationary basis.

This show had a great cast and I loved how the directors made NYC look like so many different, exotic places

I couldn't agree more, ABC didn't give this show the chance it deserved, granted it was expensive to make I think it deserved another season like NBC did for Smash. ABC gave it lousy time slot and tried to market it to Mad Men fans when it's a completely different show. I thought it was a refreshing change of pace compared to all those CSI, Law and Order, and crappy reality shows. This show had pretty likeable characters and I liked how the show romanticized the past. I will say some of the writng was really sloppy but I think it did get better in time and the show had some real character development. I think part of the problem with networks today is they expect shows to be a hit and have an audience right away. Looking at the past some of the most beloved TV shows weren't overnight hits, it takes time to build a show and an audience. I think TV networks don't have the patience like they used and this is affecting TV and the quality of shows greatly. It seems networks and advetisers just don't have that patience like they used to.

Or like CBS did with Vegas this past season,BTW!!!

Seinfeld nearly tanked but they kept giving it another chance, same with Star Trek though a letter campaign saved it. I loved it, was never able to catch it on sunday nights, but i am enjoying the dvd very much, just finished the Berlin eps last night.

reply

My sentiments exactly. This show also had nice looking women too.:-)

reply

Sorry but it's rubbish. The acting, the scripts, the FX. All pretty lame.

reply

AMC should have put it on right after Mad Men

reply

YES!!! Exactly!! it would have been a great fit and they could have even done a few crossover episodes
