I agree with the OP... But people are getting excited over nothing... Black Panther will barely get a couple of secondary nominations, if that...
It's not going to be a contender for Best Picture/Director/Actor/Actress... Zero nominations for these categories.
The Oscars are such a long time from now and this movie will be forgotten by then... There will be a more timely list of Oscar-bait movies then...
The exception is if the studio decides to throw a lot of money at the Oscar race... A big campain could push some nominations...
As for actual worth and quality... No. There are far superior movies every year in those main categories... Then again, last Oscars winner, Shape of Water, was middling...
Black Panther was a decent blockbuster that came at an opportune time in US culture and politics... A mass appeal corporate product that was injected with some afro-sexiness and a lot of hype, including ridiculously triggered anti-fans that were upset even before the movie was released (check out this forum to see the crybaby threads)...
But as a movie, it's as bland and as standardised as an Marvel episode... And by the Oscars there will have been one or two episodes since Panther so it's not going to be as exciting to people...
All of this could change if the studio decides to push for a big campaign to get a popular and worthy movie nominated... But I think the Oscars are too far for them to do that.
If I were an exec at Disney/Marvel, I would justify spending a bit of money on getting Black Panther nominated as pre-marketing for the next Marvel movies... Let's hope they don't get that idea!
