It might be crowd pleasing but lets be real

its no academy material..this is marvel template painted africa..just like doctor strange is marvel template painted with magic...guardians is marvel template painted space and quips..i hope it gets the same fate as wonder woman with 0 nominations...which was shamelessly trying to cash in on the metoo movement with oscars..i would rather see a small POC movie get oscar nominations than this corporate money maker

Sure it is and it's very real in the most obvious categories of Costume Design and Makeup to start with. But you're harping on the so-called Big categories of Best Picture, Best Actor, best Screenplay and etc, right? I think the academy voters see it quite differently and probably more objectively than you're stating.

I'm not sure what the Marvel template is that you're suggesting that is any different or can be viewed as a handicap for any movie? How would a film following a so called Marvel template invalidate it from Oscar consideration and nomination anyway?

I think your hopes will be dashed and you're going to be sorely disappointed in that Costume and Makeup nominations are going to be automatic because those two areas are absolute standouts for the film.

I am assuming that POC stands for Piece of Crap and not People of Color movie? Either way it appears that your real rant is against Disney creating or making a film that you feel is undeserving because it was made by a large corporation that you deem is only about making money off of entertainment and not creating art for money and entertainment? Is that the gist of your post?

reply

Yeah, umm.... the academy has been pressured to be all-inclusive for a while now, so I wouldn't be surprised if this film nailed the top prize in all categories.

How novel. When it comes to a picture with minorities the only reason it can qualify for an award is, because it being undeserved, some entity or elective body was forced or pressured to do so? Typical response by some who don't think anything different from what they know and understand is deemed worthy of consideration.

reply

It's not a picture with minorities - it's a dumb superhero movie, just like the rest of marvel/DC films.

So yes, if it got a major award, I would conclude that it was because of the pressure from various minority groups.

You have to keep in mind one simple thing, academy awards are more politicized now than they've ever been before.

Essentially, nearly every best picture award is now granted to films which don't deserve them - since this award now serves merely as a political statement.

This is where there is a departure from your train of thought about BP with many, many others.

But of course any change in the voting body of the Academy Awards voting panel was driven by politics and not by merit or critical assessment. Got it. The politics of the presenters, speakers and awardees are separate from the voters or am I missing something?

Nonetheless in your assessment the rules, voting criteria and ballots is about politics. Got it. A best picture award is Granted and not voted on by the body of voters. Must be some type of collusion and conspiracy for undeserving films. This type of political corruption has never happened for the Oscars. It used to be so perfect until people started protesting and complaining. Time to Make Oscars Great Again!

How much different is Braveheart from Black Panther?

reply

Braveheart vs. Black Panther?
Err... are you kidding? Way better script and way better acting. You should be comparing BP to spiderman and transformers, not braveheart.

reply

Nope, I'd like you to compare Braveheart to Black Panther as they are both movies. They share much in common.

reply

Sure, both have a beginning and an end. Furthermore - one is crappy superhero movie, while the other is not.

reply

Braveheart was nominated for an Oscar because it had a beginning and an end. Thanks, that was a well thought out summarization of the two. I understand now.

reply

I've already said BH had a better script and acting. The only marvel films which had strong scripts were the early x-men films. As for acting... I'd say none of the marvel films were particularly strong in that area - though even here I'd go with the early x-men films, primarily because actors had a decent script to work with.

reply

I dislike Braveheart but would watch it anyday instead of this crap.
I honestly cannot figure out what people see in it.
Is it a fear of being perceived as racist for not liking the (totally not the)first black super hero film?
Blade and Spawn are far better.

Good for you!!

Smart, well read, insightful, socially adept, pithy and on top of that you have a keen sense of the obvious. None of those are true for you are they?

Fun Fact: Marvel's first Black Superhero is indeed The Black Panther, 1966. No not Blade and not Spawn. The Black Panther isn't even African American.

reply

First Black Superhero FILM. Can you read? Selective comprehension?

Bwahahahahahahaha!

reply

The academy has along history of handing out undeserved awards for political reasons. Though more often than not it is the acting categories where they say, "so and so really deserves an Oscar before he dies," and then magically some actor gets one even though everyone knew some other actor was actually better that year.

In the end the Oscars are the most ridiculous thing in the world. Think about it... the only people voting are the supposedly experts in their field... Well if they were all experts how is it that these so called experts are for the most part in more bad movies than good movies... If they were experts shouldn't they never be associated with dog turd movies?

reply

Pretty much. It's a good, fun, well-made action movie, great for what it is but NOT the sort of thing the AMPAS likes, and not a film for the ages either. It'll be nominated for costume and maybe for some technical awards, and that'll probably be that. Although there's an outside chance of a Best Picture nomination if the field turns out to be unusually weak, but it won't win.

Now if there were an award for Hottest Man instead of Best Supporting Actor, Jordan would have a lock...

reply

Can't disagree there. What that means though is the Marvel template is far more successful than the WBDC template. Even the unknown Marvel properties fitted with the formula have absolutely destroyed the supposedly hugely popular DC a-list properties. Black Panther clawed Justice League to shreds.

reply

Well it does genuinely deserve some noms for techs. But no, it's just a fairly typical blockbuster not Do the Right Thing 2018.

Did you know that Black Panther made it's debut in Do The Right Thing?

IMO BP one of the better MCU film, but just an average formulaic action film with a rather silly premise and astoundingly bad CGI.

Oscar material? lol, I would have barely seen that with Logan or WW (though the former got a writing nod and WW won some prestigious awards like Critics' Chouce Award), I see it even less with this one.

But they nominated Get Out too, which surprised me a bit.

The Academy Awards are a joke and no longer have any bearing on the quality of a movie. It's just a rediculous PC event now so Hollywood can Pat itself on the back for being so enlightened.

reply

I agree, Burk. It's a popularity contest. Now with the Best Picture having up to 10 nominees, it only takes a small majority to win. For many years, the Best Picture has gone to a movie that many people haven't or won't see. No wonder the telecasts continue to go down in viewership.

reply

Rocky won Best Picture, and it's a movie similar to Black Panther.

They both present a fictional situation as reality in order to tap into racial pride. Forty-two years ago, white people were walking out of theaters full of pride saying, "Yeah, a white boxer can almost beat a black boxer." Today, black people are walking out of theaters full of pride saying, "Yeah, Wakanda, that can happen."

Nope. Stallone based his Rocky script on an actual human being - the white American boxer Chuck Wepner - who in 1975 lasted almost 15 rounds with the reigning heavyweight champ Muhammed Ali. Wepner knocked Ali to the canvas just as Rocky did to Creed. Wepner grew up poor in a tough, working class eastern city, just like Rocky. Rocky is a faithful biography compared to the comic book fantasyland junk of Black Panther.
