So if you can kick the king's butt you get to become king? Really?

Or did I miss something? (which is entirely possible) Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film but I found this particular plot point to be somewhat strange.

I think if you are a potential heir to the throne (Close blood ties with the last king or tribal leader) then you can challenge the successor to the throne to a battle for it.

M'Baku was the leader of the Jabari tribe and so could contest the new king if he wanted, Erik Killmonger was T'Challa's cousin and so had blood ties allowing him to fight (That ring he had was enough evidence apparently).

I'm cool enough with it, if the rainbow bridge to Asgard can be repaired after us being told that it can't I'm up for a bit of brawling for the crown.

Okay i slightly overlooked the detail about only noble or royal blood being able to challenge but still it's kind of a politically neglectful way to go about things as we see how easy it is for someone dangerous to take over and immediately turning everything on its head

I certainly hear what you are saying but, for comic book movie reasons, is it really that inefficient?

The king/Black Panther needs to protect his peoples and this is a good way of showing that they are the best.

It's a bit silly but it is effective to that end.

I'm honestly just finding things to nitpick about. It didn't hurt the film or anything. Nonetheless my guess is Wakanda government would be inclined be reform that tradition in some capacity.

It's a concept that comes from the days of monarch rule. That even spawned a catchphrase: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_king_is_dead,_long_live_the_king!

The seemingly contradictory phrase is used to simultaneously announce the death of the previous monarch and assure the public of continuity by saluting the new monarch.

They keep it old school with this one aspect. It’s been done in quite a few movies and stuff (goes back to the days of old).

Didn't this challenge happen in The Lion King?

Scar only refused to challenge Mufasa because, "When it comes to brute strength... I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool."

reply

If memory serves me right, it did. Interestingly, some have drawn parallels between Black Panther and The Lion King.
