they were pretty bad actors,
I felt they did remarkably well considering they aren't actors by trade. There were some stellar moments all around.
But I was even willing to try to ignore that, but when they were listening to their own music or when they were wearing their own shirts?
๎
But. . . . they were playing themselves. . . . . . kind of. . .
Also. . . I've had friends similar to them. They lived in a warehouse in Dallas, and made music all day. They would often play it too. As well, they were always putting pictures of each other on shirts for promotion or play. . . that technology has been really cheap for a long time.
that's when I lost all respect for the movie and the director.
You seem very open minded.
that's like the most egotistical thing I have ever seen
Kanye West is the most egotistical thing I've ever seen. Ninja and Yolandi's style is a bit of punk rock meets ghetto fabulous. . . purposefully trashy to upset the squares. Also, it kind of factors into this being a truly self aware film about self aware AI.
, and the fact that the director let it be showed me everyhing I needed to know.
Me too. It showed me that every once in a while a film maker can write, produce, and direct his own vision without anyone telling him he's wrong. It's just art.
it reminded me of when Vanilla Ice showed up in the Ninja Turtles 2 but that was just a very small scene.
Except that was safe and totally made sense in the realm of commercialized media.
I would have even been ok with having Ninja and Yolandi be secondary characters,
They were supporting characters to the mechanical protagonist.
I wish they were just henchmen for a bigger bad guy,
They technically were. . . until Ninja beat hippo to death with a shovel anyway.
but making them basically the stars of your movie ?
Trust me when I say this entire thing was Neill's "FU" to mainstream cinema, and his critics.
I don't even dislike them either as musicians,
Yep. They're pretty rad. . . that's why Blomkamp made a Die Antwoord movie, largely based on their style and attitude.
the director just was pretty childish and stupid about it.
What part of staying true to oneself is childish and stupid? Michael Bay has been trying to escape Transformers and do original work for the better part of a decade. Making a movie that is uniquely you, without studio meddling, is next to unheard of these days. . . on this scale (or the appearance of this scale).
Even the studio knew it wasn't going to be good, but he wouldn't care or listen.
That's absurd. The named studios are only there in name alone. Primarily distribution. They made money on a film that came to them almost entirely produced. That's all they care about. He had nobody to answer to but himself.
This even reminded me of that terrible KISS movie from the 70s.
You almost get it.
