Between Chappie's voice and a great deal of what he says and does, the silly "Short Circuit" came to mind more often than it should have.
My people skills are fine. It's my tolerance of morons that needs work.
Chappie has a very different voice and accent. Dude, I wish Johnny five would call Steve Guttenberg a "f--k mother" and threaten to shank him, sadly Johnny and Chappie said drastically different things. What Chappie does is find himself, but only after going against the mandate of his "creator" and questioning the world around him. . . then Chappie begins to create life in his own image.
. . . all J5 ever accomplished, apart from warming a few hearts, was getting a plaque from the mayor declaring him "alive". The ceremony was so tiny and patronizing. That award is pretty much the equivalent of a sixth place Special Olympics medal.
Johnny-5 figured out morality in a fraction of the time it took Chappie. J-5 had more compassion for a grasshopper then Chappie had for human life. And when J-5 was enraged with the human that tried to kill him and his friends he never even considered killing or hurting him, he decided straight away his mission was to catch him and hand him over to the authorities. Not to bash on Chappie, he was a very likable AI, but J-5 is not his backwater neanderthal predecessor. I mean, J-5 achieved acceptance as the first robotic person. When last seen everyone wanted Chappie annihilated.
Why do people so frequently get told to read the book on a movie database?
Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Short Circuit. I grew up with it, learning moral lessons right along side J5. Aside from some jokes, all I've stated is the two films differ greatly. Short Circuit would have never dared to touch some of Chappie's harsh and often realistic themes.
shareYeah, I love Short Circuit. It's a fun movie, but people can't compare that to this. As you said, Chappie questions things, learns, and grows, just like a child does, and I think that's the point of this movie. However, I had a real problem with the very, very end of the movie BECAUSE of what Chappie does. He's not god, and shouldn't try to play him/her/it. I realize he's trying to save all the "good" people, but that's not his decision to make, or his right to do.

sure shortcircuit is an obvious reference point but that movie has a well-written plot!
