Willow Smith didn't drop out. She aged out. By the time filming was ready to start she was too old to play the part.
I had heard when she wasn't cast that Will Smith had pulled his support and financial backing for the project and almost put it in danger. I'm guessing that was wrong since he was still on the credits as a producer.
