What happened to Annie's parents in the movie?

Did they ever mention what happened to them, I remember the movie novel said they died from an unexpected illness

they abandoned her when she was a baby. Remember the note written on the Italian restaurant receipt?

It was never revealed in this movie. But in the 1982 movie the parents had died in a fire which is why they never returned for her.

Ya know, when the orphanage mistress mentions their manner of deaths so off-handed an dmatter-of-factly in the movie I was kinda taken aback. I mean, it seemed like a kind of a morbid thing to add into a kiddie movie for an important point of closure.

I wonder if that was just done to make the ending seem all the more happy and fortunate for Annie.

In the book on Broadway musical, it was illness. Mom got sick; dad got Annie out of house- got sick and delerious before he told anyone. Influenza, I believe.
