Anyone watching without having read the book?
and not caring, really, about the book while watching? (although I do plan on reading it sometime?

shareI actually didn't really like the book the first time I read it. I've reread it again since the series started and have enjoyed it a lot more - so perhaps you're doing it in the right order.
Me and Brits are done with story time and we wants to get our recess on
Yes, and I just want to know and talk about what's going on in the show. All these other posters going on about 'well in the book' this happens and they did this because etc. It's rather annoying, I don't want to read the book because I don't think it will be very riveting and I dislike a few of the characters. The series has been very good though.
shareI am someone that has read the book and I still agree with you. I know I have referred to parts in the book but have only done it (I hope!) when I am replying to someone who has already mentioned the book, or asked a question regarding the book. I also don't like the tone that some people are using when they talk about 'well in the book' - this is a message board about the TV series so the book is irrelevant, regardless of whether people who have read the book think they should have included things, or annoyed that they've added things.

That's exactly how I felt about it when I first read it. I've enjoyed it more on reread.

Yeah, that pretty much describes me. Even when we've had the book on our coffee table for weeks at a time, I just haven't made it a priority.
The Angels Have the Phone Box
I seem to be the opposite of most other posters...............
Enjoyed the book immensely, but am swinging between irritation and boredom with the TV series.
This is usually the case when one reads the book before viewing the film/TV series - always comparing the visual interpretation with how I received the book.
Yes. I've never read the book but am enjoying the TV series a lot.

yup thats me
Thanks for all the answers. I was surprised at the number of people referring to the book.
shareMy adult son has not yet read the book, but he has been watching the series and enjoying it immensely. I am almost certain - judging by the way he talked about it - that he is enjoying it far more than I am (and I read the book around 3 months ago.)
From my experience it is usually a better plan (if you can manage it) to see the film/TV series before reading the book - of anything. When the book is read first there are in-built expectations of how we want the series to be, and what things we would emphasise or even leave out were we the film-makers. For instance, as nit-picking as this sounds, my mental image of Gary (while I was reading the book) was that he'd be small, wiry, and a bit rat-faced - so they cast Anthony Hayes, who is anything but small, wiry and rat-faced!!! And I also visualised both Rosie and Gary as having dark hair, and while I was reading the book I felt that Alex Dimitriades would make an excellent Hector. Now, on that last point, I think he is better cast as Harry, as he has played Harry as having a really threatening presence, even when he's being `charming'..........especially when he's being charming.

Actually in this case I think this is one of the rare instances where the way that the characters were portrayed in the TV series mostly proved to be better than the way they imagined them in the book (physically as well as personality wise). For some reason I had this image of Hector being quite ugly and lecherous and much fatter and older than Tsolakis probably intended us to imagine him, rapidly balding and with a moustache. The TV portrayal of Hector humanized him for me, made him seem like much more of an ordinary person and that in turn had an impact on how I viewed the story.
Having said that, I do agree with you on a few of the other points. I imagined Gary much differently -I pictured him as looking somewhere between a mixture of Gary McDonald (Norm Gunston, Mother and Son) and Kelvin Thomson, the Labor MP for Wills (I'll include a link to his parliamentary portrait to show you what I mean but he's shaved off his moustache with is irritating because it was him with a moustache that I imagined Gary to be quite similar looking to)

I agree with you that I pictured Rosie with dark hair. Harry looked just as I imagined him to be. Anouk looked much nicer than I'd imagined her.

I am, and I'm enjoying it so far
I have a policy about honesty and ass-kicking. If you ask for it, I have to let you have it.
Replying in sequence here. Not read it do have it but a couple of friends who are avid readers (one is a parent one is not have read it)have had very mixed reactions to it - hating it immensely and loving it. Have enjoyed the series and just watched 'Rosie'. I have to say really well done to Melissa and the chap who plays Gary(sorry can't recall his name without going back to the cast list)superb acting this ep. I still dislike Rosie a lot and thought she got her just desserts, especially when the Muslim chap told her to stay away from them, he finds her toxic. Re how physically the characters look, not having read the book can't comment too much but was struck at what a lovely colour Gary's hair is that is the actor who plays him. I also think the actress who plays Anouk is very striking. Can't deal with the racism seen though unfortunately.
shareI usually spend my time complaining about adaptions but I think the stuff that they've added (Rosie's courtroom scene, Connie trying again and again to seduce Hector, Manolis dancing with Demitri) have been brilliant additions and I haven't missed much of what they took out. I really enjoyed the book and for once I'm very happy with the adaption.
My teenage angst has a body count
I wouldn't say I wouldn't care, but I have not read the book. I didn't know about it until I actually saw the show on DirecTV just recently. I actually am interested in reading the book. Lately, I've noticed I am going from tv show or movie to book, when it was always the other way around where I had read a book and then wanted to see the movie/tv show! Makes me sad that I have been too busy and lazy to read great books of late! I used to be addicted to reading everything under the sun!
