What happens to the guy who did the slap? SPOLIER

I have just been reading about this series and wondered what happened to Harry who gave the slap? What was the outcome for him???

If my memory serves me correctly, nothing untoward happens to him. Harry seems to be one of these teflon-coated individuals who treats others like c r a p and gets away with it. I find this in itself an interesting plot device - that the most unlikeable, most abusive person in the story walks away without having to account for any of his behaviour, and he continues to prosper - in his own way.

I think the last we hear of him is when his wife is again pregnant - poor thing.

Intresting you say that, BUT my question is what if Hugo had hurt Rocco? Do you honestly think Rosie or Gary would of done a darn thing? Hugo spit on an old man, the child had no guidence or boundries. All the damagae Hugo did on purpose and he never was reprimanded by his parents. What the hell kind of parenting is that? I think Harry did the right thing for his son at the right time. His other behavoir with his wife, employees, girlfriend and various others was awful and vile. But if someone was about to hit my child with a cricket bat I sure as hell would of reacted.

He did basically get off scott free and Sandi was pregnant at the end of the book and movie. Rosie was the one who lied to Hugo and said that Harry went to jail.

Interesting.

When I wrote my reply to the original question - around 2 weeks ago - I was not even considering Harry's original slapping of Hugo in his `portfolio' of behaviour. What happens in the heat of the moment frequently occurs without any thought about possible outcomes or consequences, so cannot be classed as typical of one's behaviour. Whether Harry should or should not have slapped Hugo has little to do with Hugo's inconsistent parenting. IMO to take the issue to court was also inconsidered, and largely the outcome of a history of hurt which Rosie had experienced throughout her life, and ultimately this had little to do with Hugo or Harry; she saw an opportunity to lash out at someone - anyone - and she ran with it, justifying it all the way.

My comments in my last post were more to do with Harry's general default behaviour - chiefly towards women. Of all the characters, I feel most sorry for Sandi, as now she's pregnant again, she's trapped. Perhaps this is all she knows. We don't know much about her background and why she stays with a creep like him, although I imagine the money would be one reason.

And not only was Melissa George's performance excellent (note how strongly many posters have reacted to the character of Rosie), but so was that of Alex Dimitriades........he has turned into a very fine actor.

Alex Dimitriades, Yummy. Sorry had to say it. I think over- all the casting was very good. I did feel bad for Sandi as well.Harry was such a slime bag. The kitchen scene at his girlfriends house almost made me gag.I sometimes wondered when watching the movie and reading the book the extent of Rosies jealousy. I mean I know she is meant to be this easy living hippie type. But if Gary had been a sucessful artist and they had all the money would she still be the way she is. But back to Sandi, its sad to think there are actually women out there who would stay in a marriage like that.

Hugo had dropped the bat by the time Harry hit him so wasn't a danger anymore but I agree about Rosie and Gary's parenting. They just would've made excuses for Hugo and not disciplined him. Thats abuse in my opinion and unfair on everyone that has to deal with Hugo.

Hugo will eventually pick on the wrong person, since no one will ever have reprimanded him for his violent behavior, and that person will do more than just slap him. He will likely be at least a petty criminal by his teens, then probably either a felon or a dead man.
