Breastfeeding the kid at that age.
That kid was almost bigger than her. Thats what happens when you raise spoiled kids.

... and from a production point of view ... how were they able to negotiate getting a child actor to place his mouth around a strange woman's nipple? Sort of rings alarm bells for me ...
shareWe don't actually see the child's mouth around her nipple. We see her nipple, then we see the child's face resting on her breast, and his mouth appears to be above the nipple.
shareGeese Sliceanddice, I bet you believe all the blood on television is REAL too.
shareLOL this was the most "non believable" thing in the episode.
I have witnessed 3 year olds to the max being breast fed but this kids 6 right? yeah thats total BS for shock factor. Or the book writer tried to make the Aussie characters sound way worse than what they were LOL

I've read about mothers who have continued to breast feed their kinds until they're 9.
shareWill you tell us where please? Not in the civilized world, that's for sure!

"I'd rather have breast milk than a bunch of melons"
Eeewww! NOT COMFORTABLE with that at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for breastfeeding, I have no problem with it in public places, it's up to the individual. From when my sons were small, if they saw some one breastfeeding I'd tell them that it was quite natural and normal. That's what breasts are for, it's only the western civilized world that has 'sexualized' them. In some parts of the world, mainly Africa, tribal women walk around topless because it's no big deal. Anyway, I think breastfeeding is for BABIES and maybe up to say age 2, because what's the point after they start eating solid food. It certainly isn't convenient anymore, especially when the child gets so big. Just my 2 cents worth.
shareI say 2 as well as the max...if only because I can remember events from when I was three and I being breastfed probably isn't a memory I want to be having for the rest of my life.

I dont agree with breastfeeding after age 1. Watching the movie (havent read the book) I am totally creeped out. Rosie seems to breastfeed for her own satisfaction. A child that age does not need to be breastfed, nor do they benefit at all, I am going to take a wild guess and say that Rosie was either abused as a child or slept around a lot before she had Hugo. Her lack of any sort of class, maturity and her lack of composure show me that she is doing far more damage to her child then the slap. Gary and Rosie are the epitome of White Trash.Watching the third episode made me think that the Rosie gets off to breastfeeding.
Bitch get out of my way!
I once read an article in 'That's Life' magazine (quality reading material there) about a girl who asked for a "special drink from mum" for her twelfth birthday. And it happened. And it made me die a little inside just reading about it.
shareI think reading that would make me want to be sick, literally! YUK
sharewhy is breastfeeding so repulsive to people here? are u all pre teen kids who think everything is 'sick'?
breast feeding is a matter of preferance.....just because u do not make th same choice in your own lives doesnt mean it is wrong
I've made a couple of replies on this thread so I don't know which one you are refering to, but did you bother to read ALL of this one?

Of course there is nothing wrong with breatfeeding an infant or a baby. But the character of Rosie is breastfeeding a child who can walk and talk and is clearly breastfeeding him purely for her own satisfaction. I am sorry if you dont think there is anything wrong with it, but all the woman I work with agree that it boarders on sexual abuse to breastfeed a child that age. I have raised 3 girls who are all adults now and I have one left at home, so no I am not a pre teen kid who thinks everything is sick. I am grown woman who finds Rosie and her breastfeeding addiction sick and disgusting.

'dontcare', Do you realize you replied to me? but you quoted 'sunshine pink', so I assume your comments were meant for them.
shareIn the novel I think Hugo is 5...which isnt ideal, but definatly 'not sick' to breastfeed....if i am not mistaken, Sophie harbours many feelings of detachment from her own parents and feelings of abandon during her childhood, i believe nursing Hugo and letting him get away with anything and everything is her way of nurturing him.
Sure, it is not how people do it....but unless u have had a life like Sophies its not fair to judge her choices- and to be honest she was considering stopping, so it wasnt like he was going to be 12 and still at it.
There are people who breastfeed kids much later than 7 (esp where poverty is ripe )...it may not be 'natural' but if the child is thriving then whats the harm?
I know this is nitpicking and I didn't even want to mention it. This production seems like it went all out to try and make it as authentic as possible, yet Rosie has got the 'flattest breastfeeding breasts' I've ever seen! I'm sure the actress wouldn't have minded them using 'fake bigger breasts' on her for authenticity, after all she doesn't mind baring her breasts in the context of the story. Does anyone else agree? No smart remarks please!

Yup sorry I knew he was young, breast feeding at 4 isn't too bad and to answer above, small breasts can make just as much milk as big ones !!
shareRe the size of Sophie's breasts, they are actually quite a normal size for a woman who has been breast feeding for a while. Breasts only get super-big for the first few weeks when the milk is starting to come in....once breast feeding is established the boobs often look quite small.
shareShe's not not nurturing him. She's holding him onto her in a vice grip for her own emotional comfort. What she is doing is absolutely abuse.
shareActually, does anyone here really _know_ how old he is? And I mean the boy, not the character Hugo. I was just thinking, he does look ... well, it's very hard to just guess his age, shall we say.
And then I got wondering, it's difficult to direct kids younger than 5, what if he thought he was supposed to do it for real and just went for it?! Ok, so it's fairly obvious he doesn't in the takes they used, but still.
Oh, and for those of you being all 'sick' about the whole thing: "La teta y la luna" - that boy is _nine_, and it _isn't_ faked! :p

Just watched the first episode on a flight. It was very disturbing to say the least.
Breastfeeding a child of that age is abuse.
It does seem like a bad idea to breast beed a kid until hes hold enough to get a hardon during dinner.
): )
It is not abuse in real life, only socially unacceptable and really quite unnecessary in nearly all industrialized countries. Many women do continue to nurse their children when they are clearly no longer infants in poorer countries because food is not always in great supply and it helps keep the kid both fed and hydrated. Having said that, I've heard of women in the U.S. nursing kids who are ready to start school. I'm not for that and think it's weird but it isn't abuse. However, this is a television show and I'm not sure how Australia differs from the U.S. as far as pretending to breastfeed a child under those circumstances. Obviously it isn't illegal to do it there or they would not have filmed it.
shareIn that scene it seemed abusive to me. The kid had anger issues, and got into trouble with the other kids for it. Instead of moderating and letting him socialize properly with other kids, the mother took him out and breastfed him. What does feeding have to do with insecurity? I'm sure the mother felt insecure just as the kid did. Displaying her breast not only to her kid but also to all the other older kids is a strange way of simultaneously showing power and distracting from her shortcomings.
It's less that she breastfeeds her 3 year old son, but in that situation it showed how psychological unstable the mother is. And even if we don't consciously know why and what, most people instinctively know that it was totally screwed up. Screwing up your kids = abuse =)
Breast feeding a boy that age is not anything close to abuse especially sexual abuse as it is not a sexual act.
Breastfeeding beyond infancy is actually considered healthy by many experts
It's illegal to film a scene like for TV. I think the producers are getting into trouble, show will be canceled, and they will be arrested.
