The so-called "half-breed" (spoilers)
I haven't seen anyone on the boards or in reviews comment on this. That was actually one of the major revelations about Woody's past: he was quite the ladies' man. Not only did the newspaper lady love him and lose him (and then seem to keep pining for him all her life despite marriage and children and grandchildren), but he had an affair with a Native American woman for whom, Pernsley sneers, he professed to feel "in love with", something he had previously scoffed at when discussing his marriage to David's mom.
So how much has his haunted regretfulness, of a life unlived, been at least to a degree about this road not taken?
