David's ex Girlfriend scene

David's ex says to water the plants "they are plants". What's the significance of her pocketing a couple of leaves?

reply

I took it as she is weirdly impulsive. With her weight, with her suddenly deciding to move out, etc. Of course, maybe she was just weird.

Odd. I found it kind of touching, as if she didn't quite want to let go, move out, and was holding on to their (stagnant?) life together by keeping a remnant close.

I agree with that.

Its a sad and very real scene. Forte obviously can't and won't commit to this woman for marriage. The film is honest enough to present her not only as obsese, but as not much caring about her appearance at all (make-up, hair, clothes.)

Most poignant: Forte asks "Are we still going to have sex?" Because in real life, its kinda true. A man of a certain type will look past weight and looks if he can have regular sex with ANY woman. We've all seen those couples.

She cares about him. That's why she takes the plant leaves. And she just might come back. Its doubtful she can do better in the looks department than Forte, and likely can't find a breadwinner in that state.

I just took it as she saw a dead leaf on the plant because he hadn't been watering it and she pulled it off and stuffed it in her pocket to throw away later because she didn't want to embarrass him.
