Did the couple come back for the speakers?

This is one question that has nagged me since seeing the movie. Do you think Janees and her boyfriend/husband ever bought those speaker David showed them?

Here is my interpretation: David gives them his card. They call his cell phone while he is on his road trip; however, since David is basically in the middle of nowhere, he doesn't get reception. Therefore, he misses Janees and her husband's call.

Now, there are two outcomes to this. One is that the couple goes back to David's store and buys speakers from another salesman. The other is that they go to another store and buy speakers there. Both scenarios are plausible, but I guess we'll never know.

I hate movies that don't tie up loose ends.

I think they are gonna make a sequel and answer those questions. Should be an exciting film.

Thanks for the laugh!

there's more than one way to pronounce Janice and since he didn't say her name right, she won't buy from him.

reply

Yep. I would not buy from a salesman who couldnt remember my name. Nope.

There's no other place to buy those speakers in Billings. I've been there, I know. So the question really comes down to, were these two hit hard enough by the recession to make buying new speakers out of their reach? Because I think from the way they walked away, the answer is yes, they were hit hard.

But going along with your scenario, yes, David misses the call, so he doesn't get the commission. This puts him into a downward spiral of debt that forces him to sell the truck and compressor he just bought. Soon, he is walking the highways, just like his dad.

I guess the scene where David attempt to sell speakers to the couple which normally other sales person won't bother to try, the fact that David try to save his relationship with his unattractive girlfriend and the way he deal patiently with his father conditions are all just a way to describe the way he sees the world and how sweet and nice this guy is.

Of course they weren't going to buy the speakers from David.

They were going to find them someplace else - either online, or on a trip to a bigger city with a discount chain - and buy them there for less.

Nah, they won't. They were there to test the device, see how it sounds and if they liked they would buy it from internet for a better price.

I agree, they weren't buying. I took this scene to show that David's life wasn't turning out the way he would have liked; he couldn't close the sale, he's having trouble with his girlfriend, and now the problem of his dad.

I agree that this was another reminder of the tenuous relationships in David's life, how people basically just wasted his time and forgot about him afterward.

I suspect the couple was trying to make a quick break with that "we'll think about it" line. Oh well, that couple probably wasn't built to last anyway -- unlike those speakers, which are solid state.

Right... that couple looked like they were probably hoping to get some tube speakers that cost $50K. And when David couldn't come up with them in Billings, MT, they were going to have to jet into LA to a REAL audiophile emporium and get the heat generators they're fixated on.

😁

It's pretty obvious what happened with the couple and the speakers; it's all in the subtext. Frankly, I'm surprised you didn't pick up on it.
