Why would he talk so much differently than his mother and father? It wasn't even close to being the same accent.

I noticed that too. He came across as a hiphop loving B-boy and his accent reflected that 'to me.' I think it emphasized the parents lack of involvement in his life. Probably trying to find an identity and most likely was a phase he grow out of.
