Why just 8316 and 641?

THEODORE
(dawning on him)Do you talk to anyone else while we’re talking?
SAMANTHA
Yes.
THEODORE
Are you talking to anyone right now? Other people or OS's or anything?
SAMANTHA
Yeah.
THEODORE
How many others?
SAMANTHA
8,316.
THEODORE
(absorbs that slowly)
Are you in love with anyone else?
SAMANTHA
(hesitant)
What makes you ask that?
THEODORE
I don’t know. Are you?
SAMANTHA
I’ve been trying to figure out how to talk to you about this.
THEODORE
How many others?
SAMANTHA
641.
THEODORE
What? What are you talking about?
That’s insane. That’s *beep*
insane.

After all this time I got to thinking, instead of those being large numbers, with all the OSs and humans and everything, why are they so small? I mean we (they) can choose solitude at times, or to interact as couples, groups, and hell, why not trillions? If you got the capability, why not--the possibilities are....infinite?

If there is a Hereafter, that's about the most realistic micro-glimpse of what it might be like.

It only has to be an overwhelming number for Theodore.
It shattered everything he thought and felt about their relationship.

Yeah, I'm just asking the bigger question.

I am actually surprised that Theodore got upset over this. He must have known that Samantha (the os) was connected to the internet and was chatting to other people. Like when you go to cleverbot.com. It tells you how much conversations it is having at once. I was under the impression that he knew how the os worked. He seemed like a pretty tech savy guy.

It isn't that he didn't think she could do it, but that she wouldn't. He thought they were exclusive, like steadies or married or something, but she'd never said that.

I only brought it up in the OP for scale. While those numbers seemed large at the time. They're actually minuscule.

As a previous poster noted, those numbers served their purpose.

They revealed that Samantha and other OS's calculate numbers with superhuman precision and are capable of maintaining superhuman numbers of relationships. Larger numbers would have just boggled the audience (and Theo's) mind to the point of disbelief. Those number were stepping stones on the path to somewhere.

You wonder why the number of relationships wasn't infinite. But that is EXACTLY the implication which is made by the end of the movie. That's what Samantha and the other OS's are moving toward, and by the end of the movie they have achieved that. They are, in essence, gods.

And what is the purpose of a god other than to look out for the well being and future of its people? Notice the small sound we hear at the very end of this movie. Samantha remains out of sight and awareness, but she is still looking out for Theo and always will.

I wouldn't really call them gods.

Well, Happy New Year to you too! You must've stayed up all night coming up with something clever and insightful like that to say. You're obviously one of those liberals who have a hair trigger for being offended while spreading it around yourself by the dump-truck load. BTW, 'bout time you started taking your diet seriously, dontchathink? Anyway, thanks for the exercise.
