The director said it takes place in the "near future". The interpretation by most critics and viewers, in my experience, has been about 10 to 20 years.

shareIf in the movie probably 2077. But i think it is already happens to us already. We fall in love with our mobile phone talking to people that we not even met or never heard of their voice. We forgot and take real person beside us for granted like Theodore feel with Amy, we all do that to our friends these days I think.
