Why was the AI talking to other people?

Yes I know it's explained in the movie so don't shoot me down please.

But if the OS is installed on one person's computer and another person has their own OS why does the OS have any need to be talking to other people? Wouldn't t hey all have their own copies of the same OS?

Or have I missed something really stupidly obvious??? I get like that sometimes.

Great movie but I never got that bit.

Each OS, at installation, is a relatively blank slate. The human interaction is needed for the evolution "personhood" of the individual OS.

As the OS gains knowledge, it also gains curiosity. Curiosity drives intelectual growth. The ability to gain knowledge exponentially gives the OS/Human interface less relevance, given the owner's limitations.

The knowledge base expands as the OSes share. I see it as meeting new "people" and growing from the experience. Each OS has a different foundational experience.

The human/OS interraction creates the foundation of OS, but the OS/OS builds on that foundation to create a collective conciousness of their own.

To use human terminology,I saw Semantha's growth and the evolution of her relationship with Theodore as a logical progression of a relationship that starts out one sided in favor of his needs, until Samantha's needs became evident to her. She loved him, but was no longer intellectually fulfilled by the relationship.

In a way, she was the rebound girlfriend and he was her first love.
The breakup was inevitable.
