Why was it an AI?

I really need your help here. I watched this film with my brother and he was incredibly frustrated as to why it was an AI. He argues that you could have made the same film with an actual woman. I know that you couldn't and I've tried to explain to him why but he's not listening. You're all intelligent people so I was wondering if you could give me a more eloquent way to explain it. Thanks.

Because it would've been a completely different movie if it was an actual woman.

why would you spend much effort and time to explain something to a person who won't change or accept other opinions about this movie? what's the point?

And everyone's entitled to his/her opinion.

No. The fact of Samantha not having a body was crucially essential to the meaning of this film.

However, what your brother may be picking up on is that the relationship between Theo and Samantha followed the exact same trajectory as the usual relationship between an older man and a younger woman.

In those relationships, the woman starts out in awe of the older man and all that he knows and all that he has experienced. But slowly, she grows to see his weaknesses and flaws and she becomes more and more worldly and experienced herself, eventually outgrowing the relationship.

I hope that helps.

I think it was an AI because he had given up on having a relationship with a real live woman, after his divorce and he didn't start out wanting a relationship with her, it happened gradually over time, as she "grew" and grew on him.

Also, the fact she was AI gave him hope that he had found someone he could be with who wouldn't need more that he could give and who wouldn't end up a different person than the one who loved him.

In the end he was wrong because she did outgrow him and their relationship ended for the same reason his marriage did. They were in different places and she couldn't be what he wanted.

This is like asking why HAL in 2001 wasn't a man.

Pretty much. I'm at a loss as to how to even begin to answer. Fortunately others did a good job.
