I thought the same thing. To me, in a way the whole movie was like a very dark Rocky 3, with the champ losing everything and then being taught how to fight in a more intelligent style.
The similarities weren't that obvious though - Southpaw is a very good film in it's own right.
He had enough sense not to ruin another set of children's lives.. I don't think he forgave him or got over the death of his wife, he just knew that it would be the kids who suffered. That said, I think those particular kids probably would have been better off in care
