Why did Miguel feel to mention his wife during the fight?

I know it was to make billy mad so he lose his defends, but come on. It's was not only low but also unnecessary as specially when one of his man killed her. No one would ever do that professionally or in real life.

To make him mad and throw Hope off his game.

That's basically what i said, but it doesn't make sense in the situation had. Honestly... For me it felt like he was sorry for what happened in the first act but in the third act he was being a straight up *beep* and when said it was pretty much useless because hope kept still his defenses up, so what's the point?

I thought Miguel should have been more fleshed out instead of being the antagonist of the film.

reply

It was just sloppy writing.

Theres a lot of good in this movie.
But the structure was not so good.

reply

I don't think Miguel really felt sorry for what happened. He never personally apologized to Billy or even reached out to him. Also in the scene where Maureen gets shot he's shouting at his crew member for shooting her while he simultaneously helps smuggle the gun out. I think he was only shouting to distract from the smuggling process. I didn't feel like he was genuinely mad at his crew member for shooting.

reply

What makes you think no one would ever do that? It happens in sports all time, just listen to an interview about why fights get started on the court/field.

reply

What about the part where he took the gun from his friend, who shot his wife, and hid it?

reply

Your sentences make no sense. If, as you state, his goal was to make Billy mad and drop his defense then how is one of his guys shooting the wife in any way connected? He'd use any leverage he had on him to make him mad.

Second, people do *beep* like that all the time everywhere.

Miguel was a macho d bag and not the sharpest tool

It was a calculated attempt at catharsis from the writers. Into the 11th round it was pretty much a blow-by-blow even fight, and they had to step it up, get Billy to react and thereby make for a more climactic ending. No Rocky-esque knockout, but at least he prevailed, and more importantly he redeemed himself by not succumbing to uncontrolled rage over the dead wife comment. Escobar's grief and then Billy's joy getting back his daughter made for a great finale.
