That's sarcasm right?
With a capital /S.

No they showed a feature on it during a real HBO boxing fight
He trained with real life boxers.
Besides, he wasn't even that muscular just cut and toned.
[deleted]
he trained just like a boxer does and boxers are not aloud to take supplements/ steroids
Look at Floyd Mayweather, or Manny Paquio.
[deleted]
Look at Michael B. Jordan in Creed
Dude is ripped now. He was not like that a year ago
Hence, my point about Leto who was skinny as hell and now is ripped to play the Joker in Suicide Squad
But I'm just saying it's not hard to get ripped if you work out like crazy everyday.

you do realize that release dates aren't the same as actual film dates right? you seem to think that just bc a movie was released in 2015 that it was filmed in 2015.. not true.. usually films are filmed in a short 3-6 months and post production takes years to get right, some movies are filmed and sit on the shelf for years bc studios don't release them.. idk if he took steroids or not but it's possible that he looked like *beep* in 2012 for night crawler and started working out for the filming of southpaw during post production and still accomplished muscles withing 2 years.. southpaw doesn't quite need much post production.. not a lot of detailed scenes or big shots to get perfect..
shareDisclaimer: Dont think im trying to dicredit Jake Gyllenhaal as an actor or a man, personally I think he is one of the best of his time and love all his work, personally I dont care if he took steroids or not, but in my opinion he did by looking at the growth rate and time period, so kill me for putting my opinion to the OPs question.

in 2012 for night crawler and started working out for the filming of southpaw during post production and still accomplished muscles withing 2 years.
Principal photography began on October 6, 2013 in Los Angeles and lasted 27 days.[12] Gyllenhaal lost 20 lb (9.1 kg) for his role.[13] The full production process took approximately 27 weeks from first shot to picture lock.
On March 6, 2014, Antoine Fuqua signed on to direct, with Jake Gyllenhaal replacing Eminem in the lead role
Principal photography began on June 16, 2014.
you clearly left out "it's possible" never did I say it was! these people have the best of everything!
sharealso didn't mention make up and cgi, ya know to secure the look.. either emaciated or muscular..
shareCGI making him look like that in under a year is more believable than being a natty.
Dont be so naive. Both of you havnt brought a single decent argument or point, backed anything up with evidence, both counter my explained points with non points and deflections and clearly know nothing, absolutely zero about building muscle.
If you do know something inbox me your facebook or instagram of your progress and I will show you mine.
southpaw doesn't quite need much post production.. not a lot of detailed scenes or big shots to get perfect..
A lot of people on here seem to take this personally for some reason..
I'm sure actors that go from skinny to cut in between movies are getting some enhancements.
Next thing you'll tell me is that Stalone and Arnold are on steroids!!? :P
Finally someone see''s that im not getting at the actors. I was just replying to the OP with my opinion.
shareBut he also was generally much larger and lost weight for nightcrawler. Not even really that much. I don't think it's unrealistic to say he probably didn't take anything. You seem to be arguing hard that it isn't feasible.
Yes gaining size is hard, more for some than others, but I don't think it's as hard as you're making it out to be for him to have achieved that physique.
Christian bale on the other hand, yeah, clearly the guy is prepared to do whatever it takes to himself to get the right look so I don't doubt he would do something that absurd.
Dude, check logic, check the dates, check how muscle growth works, check how much muscle he packed on in under a year and again check logic.
You workout brah? lets see your muscle growth in such a short space of time, lets see you in 1 single year and how much muscle you have packed on, forget it, i'll give you a year and a half, nearly double what Jake had to give your argument a chance. We can swap instagrams so im not just talking out of my a$$Hole like you schlubs sat on the couch thinking large amount of muscle growth comes easy within under a year.
If it comes that easy in under a year why isn't everybody doing it and looking bulked up?
because its hard, its called genetics, science and logic.
Yeh probably, also hard work a nutritionist, personal trainer and lots of free time.
But yeh, night crawler was filmed in 2014, he lost 20lb's for that. Muscles mass was down, skinny as a rake then a year later he builds all that muscle mass, bulks up and gets lean at the same time.
Its easy to get fat, but hard to build muscle and get lean at the same time in about year if that.
Pretty much impossible unless you are genetic freak, but most Hollywood stars seem to be.
Some actors claim they get that athletic body through hard work, training, prayers and vitamins.
Other actors have been more honest about chemical assistance.
It's that man again!!
Gyllenhaal lost 30 lb for Nightcrawler and put most of it back on for Southpaw.
I hope he didn't bugger himself up for later in his life.
Starvation is hard on a body.
Of course he did. All actors that go from average looking to muscular/ripped in a short amount of time took steroids. Achieving that naturally takes a very long time, and rich people can't be bothered with waiting a long time when there's a movie to be made. Look at how fast Christopher Reeve bulked up for Superman. He was putting on muscle mass so quickly that they had to reshoot some of the earlier scenes because he was noticeably smaller than in his later scenes. Anyone who thinks that can be done naturally is naive.
